Маленький принц

And he laughed again.	И он опять засмеялся.
"You are not fair, little prince," I said.	- Ты несправедлив, дружок.
"I don't know how to draw anything except boa constrictors from the outside and boa constrictors from the inside."	Я ведь никогда и не умел рисовать - разве только удавов снаружи и изнутри.
"Oh, that will be all right," he said, "children understand."	- Ну ничего, - успокоил он меня. - Дети и так поймут.
So then I made a pencil sketch of a muzzle.	И я нарисовал намордник для барашка.
And as I gave it to him my heart was torn.	Я отдал рисунок Маленькому принцу, и сердце у меня сжалось.
"You have plans that I do not know about," I said.	- Ты что-то задумал и не говоришь мне...
But he did not answer me.	Но он не ответил.
He said to me, instead: "You know - my descent to the earth... Tomorrow will be its anniversary."	- Знаешь, - сказал он, - завтра исполнится год, как я попал к вам на Землю...
Then, after a silence, he went on: "I came down very near here."	- И умолк. Потом прибавил: - Я упал совсем близко отсюда...
And he flushed.	- И покраснел.
And once again, without understanding why, I had a queer sense of sorrow.	И опять, бог весть почему, тяжело стало у меня на душе.
One question, however, occurred to me:	Все-таки я спросил:
"Then it was not by chance that on the morning when I first met you - a week ago - you were strolling along like that, all alone, a thousand miles from any inhabited region?	- Значит, неделю назад, в то утро, когда мы познакомились, ты не случайно бродил тут совсем один, за тысячу миль от человеческого жилья?
You were on the your back to the place where you landed?"	Ты возвращался к месту, где тогда упал?
The little prince flushed again.	Маленький принц покраснел еще сильнее.
And I added, with some hesitancy:	А я прибавил нерешительно:
"Perhaps it was because of the anniversary?"	- Может быть, это потому, что исполняется год?..
The little prince flushed once more.	И снова он покраснел.
He never answered questions - but when one flushes does that not mean "Yes"? "Ah," I said to him,	Он не ответил ни на один мой вопрос, но ведь когда краснеешь, это значит "да", не так ли?
"I am a little frightened - "	- Неспокойно мне... - начал я.
But he interrupted me.	Но он сказал:
"Now you must work.	- Пора тебе приниматься за работу.
You must return to your engine.	Иди к своей машине.
I will be waiting for you here.	Я буду ждать тебя здесь.
Come back tomorrow evening..."	Возвращайся завтра вечером...
But I was not reassured.	Однако мне не стало спокойнее.
I remembered the fox.	Я вспомнил о Лисе.
