The night was as still as the night before, but there were fewer clouds in the sky, and the outlines of bushes, even of tall flowers, could be more distinctly seen.	Ночь стояла такая же тихая, как и накануне; но на небе было меньше туч -- и очертанья кустов, даже высоких цветов, яснее виднелись.
The first moments of expectation were oppressive, almost terrible.	Первые мгновенья ожидания были томительны, почти страшны.
I had made up my mind to everything. I only debated how to act; whether to thunder,	Я на все решился, я только соображал: как мне поступить? Загреметь ли:
'Where goest thou?	"Куда идешь?
Stand! show thyself-or death!' or simply to strike....	Стой! сознайся -- или смерть!" -- или просто поразить...
Every sound, every whisper and rustle, seemed to me portentous and extraordinary....	Каждый звук, каждый шорох и шелест казался мне значительным, необычайным...
I prepared myself....	Я готовился...
I bent forward....	Я наклонился вперед...
But half-an-hour passed, an hour passed; my blood had grown quieter, colder; the consciousness that I was doing all this for nothing, that I was even a little absurd, that Malevsky had been making fun of me, began to steal over me.	Но прошло полчаса, прошел час; кровь моя утихала, холодела; сознание, что я напрасно все это делаю, что я даже несколько смешон, что Малевский подшутил надо мною, -- начало прокрадываться мне в душу.
I left my ambush, and walked all about the garden.	Я покинул мою засаду и обошел весь сад.
As if to taunt me, there was not the smallest sound to be heard anywhere; everything was at rest. Even our dog was asleep, curled up into a ball at the gate.	Как нарочно, нигде не было слышно малейшего шума; все покоилось; даже собака наша спала, свернувшись в клубочек у калитки.
I climbed up into the ruins of the greenhouse, saw the open country far away before me, recalled my meeting with Zina?da, and fell to dreaming....	Я взобрался на развалину оранжереи, увидел пред собою далекое поле, вспомнил встречу с Зинаидой и задумался...
I started....	Я вздрогнул...
I fancied I heard the creak of a door opening, then the faint crack of a broken twig.	Мне почудился скрип отворявшейся двери, потом легкий треск переломанного сучка.
In two bounds I got down from the ruin, and stood still, all aghast.	Я в два прыжка спустился с развалины -- и замер на месте.
Rapid, light, but cautious footsteps sounded distinctly in the garden.	Быстрые, легкие, но осторожные шаги явственно раздавались в саду.
They were approaching me.	Они приближались ко мне.
'Here he is ... here he is, at last!' flashed through my heart.	"Вот он... Вот он, наконец!" -- промчалось у меня по сердцу.
With spasmodic haste, I pulled the knife out of my pocket; with spasmodic haste, I opened it. Flashes of red were whirling before my eyes; my hair stood up on my head in my fear and fury....	Я судорожно выдернул нож из кармана, судорожно раскрыл его -- какие-то красные искры закрутились у меня в глазах, от страха и злости на голове зашевелились волосы...
The steps were coming straight towards me; I bent-I craned forward to meet him....	Шаги направлялись прямо на меня -- я сгибался, я тянулся им навстречу...
A man came into view.... My God! it was my father!	Показался человек... боже мой! это был мой отец!
