The candle had not been lighted, and daylight was streaming in at the windows.	Он на той же постели, также закутанный в одеяло; свеча не зажжена, а уж в окнах белеет полный день.

He got up angrily, feeling utterly shattered; his bones ached.	Он злобно приподнялся, чувствуя, что весь разбит; кости его болели.
There was a thick mist outside and he could see nothing.	На дворе совершенно густой туман и ничего разглядеть нельзя.
It was nearly five.	Час пятый в исходе; проспал!
He had overslept himself! He got up, put on his still damp jacket and overcoat.	Он встал и надел свою жакетку и пальто, еще сырые.
Feeling the revolver in his pocket, he took it out and then he sat down, took a notebook out of his pocket and in the most conspicuous place on the title page wrote a few lines in large letters.	Нащупав в кармане револьвер, он вынул его и поправил капсюль; потом сел, вынул из кармана записную книжку и на заглавном, самом заметном листке, написал крупно несколько строк.
Reading them over, he sank into thought with his elbows on the table.	Перечитав их, он задумался, облокотясь на стол.
The revolver and the notebook lay beside him.	Револьвер и записная книжка лежали тут же, у локтя.
Some flies woke up and settled on the untouched veal, which was still on the table.	Проснувшиеся мухи лепились на нетронутую порцию телятины, стоявшую тут же на столе.
He stared at them and at last with his free right hand began trying to catch one.	Он долго смотрел на них и, наконец, свободною правою рукой начал ловить одну муху.
He tried till he was tired, but could not catch it.	Долго истощался он в усилиях, но никак не мог поймать.
At last, realising that he was engaged in this interesting pursuit, he started, got up and walked resolutely out of the room.	Наконец, поймав себя на этом интересном занятии, очнулся, вздрогнул, встал и решительно пошел из комнаты.
A minute later he was in the street.	Через минуту он был на улице.
A thick milky mist hung over the town.	Молочный, густой туман лежал над городом.
Svidrigailov walked along the slippery dirty wooden pavement towards the Little Neva.	Свидригайлов пошел по скользкой, грязной деревянной мостовой, по направлению к Малой Неве.
He was picturing the waters of the Little Neva swollen in the night, Petrovsky Island, the wet paths, the wet grass, the wet trees and bushes and at last the bush....	Ему мерещились высоко поднявшаяся за ночь вода Малой Невы, Петровский остров, мокрые дорожки, мокрая трава, мокрые деревья и кусты и, наконец, тот самый куст...
He began ill-humouredly staring at the houses, trying to think of something else.	С досадой стал он рассматривать дома, чтобы думать о чем-нибудь другом.
There was not a cabman or a passer-by in the street.	Ни прохожего, ни извозчика не встречалось по проспекту.
The bright yellow, wooden, little houses looked dirty and dejected with their closed shutters.	Уныло и грязно смотрели ярко-желтые деревянные домики с закрытыми ставнями.
