"There's a wonder, I confess,	Чудо чудное завесть
That I'm burning to possess.	Мне б хотелось.
' Tis a wonder well worth telling-	Где-то есть
Somewhere, there's a squirrel dwelling	Ель в лесу, под елью белка;
In a fir tree; all day long,	Диво, право, не безделка -
Cracking nuts, it sings a song.	Белка песенки поет, Да орешки всё грызет,
Nuts, most wondrous, I am told;	А орешки не простые,
Every shell is solid gold,	Всё скорлупки золотые,
Kernels-each an emerald pure.	Ядра - чистый изумруд;
But can I of this be sure?"	Но, быть может, люди врут".
Here the swan said in reply:	Князю лебедь отвечает:
"Yes-this rumor does not lie;	"Свет о белке правду бает;
Marvel not-though this may be	Это чудо знаю я;
Strange for you, 'tis not for me.	Полно, князь, душа моя,
Grieve not-I will gladly do	Не печалься; рада службу
This slight service, prince, for you."	Оказать тебе я в дружбу".
Home he sped with cheerful stride,	С ободренною душой Князь пошел себе домой;
Gained his palace courtyard wide.	Лишь ступил на двор широкий -
There, beneath a fir-behold!-	Что ж? под елкою высокой,
Cracking nuts all made of gold,	Видит, белочка при всех Золотой грызет орех,
Emeralds left and right a-flinging, Sat that wonder-squirrel, singing: "Through the garden there she goes, Tripping on her dainty toes." With its tail the squirrel sweeps Shells and stones in tidy heaps,	Изумрудец вынимает, А скорлупку собирает, Кучки равные кладет И с присвисточкой поет
While a charmed and happy throng	При честном при всем народе:
Listened to the squirrel's song.	Во саду ли, в огороде.
Struck with wonder, Prince Guidon	Изумился князь Гвидон.
Whispered softly: "Thank you, swan!	"Ну, спасибо, - молвил он, -
God grant you felicity	Ай да лебедь - дай ей боже,
And such joy as you gave me."	Что и мне, веселье то же".
Then a squirrel's house he built.	Князь для белочки потом
Crystal, glass, and silver gilt;	Выстроил хрустальный дом,
Set a guard, a scribe as well,	Караул к нему приставил И притом дьяка заставил
Who recorded every shell.	Строгий счет орехам весть.
