Сказка о царе Салтане

There, we saw this wondrous scene:	В свете ж вот какое чудо:
On an island, far away,	Остров на море лежит,
Stands a city, grand and gay-	Град на острове стоит
Churches tall, with golden domes,	С златоглавыми церквами,
Gardens green and stately homes;	С теремами да садами;
By the palace grows a fir	Ель растет перед дворцом,
In whose shade, O royal sir, Stands a crystal cage; and there	А под ней хрустальный дом;
Dwells a squirrel, strange and rare-	Белка там живет ручная,
Full of frolic; all day long,	Да затейница какая!
Cracking nuts, it sings a song,	Белка песенки поет, Да орешки всё грызет,
Nuts, most wondrous to behold-	А орешки не простые,
Every shell is solid gold,	Всё скорлупки золотые,
Kernels-each an emerald bright;	Ядра - чистый изумруд;
Sentries guard it day and night,	Слуги белку стерегут,
It has slaves, like any lord,	Служат ей прислугой разной -
Yes, and scribes each nut record.	И приставлен дьяк приказный Строгий счет орехам весть;
Troops in passing give salute	Отдает ей войско честь;
With their martial drum and flute.	Из скорлупок льют монету,
Maidens store these gems away Under lock and key each day;	Да пускают в ход по свету;
Coins are minted from each shell,	Девки сыплют изумруд
Coins with which they buy and sell.	В кладовые, да под спуд;
People live in plenty there,	Все в том острове богаты,
Not in huts, but mansions fair.	Изоб нет, везде палаты;
Prince Guidon reigns there, and he	А сидит в нем князь Гвидон;
Sends his compliments to thee."	Он прислал тебе поклон".
Here the tsar said, in amaze:	Царь Салтан дивится чуду.
"If but God prolong my days,	"Если только жив я буду,
I shall visit this strange isle	Чудный остров навещу,
Guest with this Guidon a while."	У Гвидона погощу".
But the cook, and royal weaver,	А ткачиха с поварихой,
With their mother, sly deceiver,	С сватьей бабой Бабарихой,
Did not wish to let the tsar	Не хотят его пустить
See this wondrous isle so far.	Чудный остров навестить.
