He seemed to perceive the conversation die away and grow less and less in vivacity and volume; but still no sign of any alarming or even notable event. At the same moment a piercing scream rose from the garden.	И сразу в саду раздался пронзительный крик.

The Dictator replied in a violent whisper, so strong and sibilant that every word was audible to the watcher at the window.	Диктатор ответил яростным шепотом, таким резким и свистящим, что до Френсиса, стоявшего у окна, донеслось каждое слово.
"Silence!' said Mr. Vandeleur; "the man is as well as I am.	- Тише! - говорил мистер Венделер. - Ничего с ним не сталось.

Francis heard Miss Vandeleur break forth into a passion of tears.	Френсис услышал, что мисс Венделер разрыдалась.
"Do you hear what I say?" resumed the Dictator, in the same tones.	- Ты слышала, что я сказал? - все так же продолжал диктатор.
"Or do you wish to quarrel with me?	- Или ты хочешь поссориться со мной?

There was another pause, and the Dictator spoke again.	Последовала пауза, потом диктатор заговорил снова:
"Take that man by the heels," he said.	- Бери его за ноги.
"I must have him brought into the house.	Мне нужно внести его в дом.
If I were a little younger, I could help myself against the world.	Будь я помоложе, я бы сам справился с кем угодно.
