When the race was ended (когда скачки завершились), there was a great noise over the strange horse (возникли шумные толки из-за этого незнакомого = нового жеребца; great – большой, огромный, громадный; большой, сильный, колоссальный, огромный /о чувствах, состояниях, свойствах и т. п./; noise – шум, гам, галдеж; толки, разговоры). Men crowded around the old fisherman (мужчины столпились вокруг старого рыбака) from every corner of the field (со всех сторон: «с каждого угла поля»; field – поле, луг; /спорт./ площадка), asking what would he take for the horse (спрашивая, какую /цену/ он возьмет за этого жеребца).

“Five hundred pounds (пятьсот фунтов),” said he.

“Here ’t is for you (вот вам /деньги/),” said the next man to him (сказал человек, стоявший рядом с ним; ’t = it; next – следующий; ближайший, соседний).

In a moment the horse was sold (в одно мгновение жеребец был продан; to sell /sold/), and the money in the old man’s pocket (и деньги /лежали/ в кармане старика). Oh, but the old fisherman was glad (как же был рад старый рыбак) when he had his son with him again (когда у него с ним был его сын), and the money in his pocket (а в его кармане – деньги)!

 It was not long till he was at the spot where the son had told him what to do. The minute he came, he shook the bridle, and the son was there before him in his own shape and features.

Oh, but the old fisherman was glad when he had his son with him again, and the money in his pocket!
