 When the pig was on a hill he was in the valley behind her; when he was on a hill, the pig was in the valley before him. At last they came to the sea-side, and the pig rushed out into the deep water straight from the shore.

The king spurred on his horse (король пришпорил своего коня) and followed the black pig through the sea (и последовал за черной свиньей по морю; through – через, сквозь; указывает на движение по какой-л. территории: по) till his horse failed under him (пока его конь не ослабел под ним; to fail – ослабевать, слабеть, терять силу) and was drowned (и /не/ утонул: «был утонувшим»).

Then the king swam on himself (тогда король поплыл вперед сам; to swim /swam, swum/) till he was growing weak (пока не стал слабеть: «становиться все слабее»; to grow – расти, увеличиваться; становиться, делаться), and said (и сказал), “It was for the death of me (на мою погибель: «именно для смерти меня») that the black pig came in my way (эта черная свинья появилась на моем пути).”

 The king spurred on his horse and followed the black pig through the sea till his horse failed under him and was drowned.

Then the king swam on himself till he was growing weak, and said, “It was for the death of me that the black pig came in my way.”

But he swam on some distance yet (но все же он проплыл еще некоторое расстояние), till at last he saw land (пока, наконец, он /не/ увидел землю). The pig went up on an island (свинья поднялась /из моря/ на остров; to go /went, gone/ up); the king too went on shore (король тоже вышел на берег), and said to himself (и сказал самому себе): “Oh! it is for no good (не к добру это; good – добро, благо) that I came here (что я прибыл сюда); there is neither house nor shelter to be seen (тут ни дома, ни приюта не видать).” But he cheered up after a while (но он воспрянул духом: «приободрился» спустя некоторое время; after – после; через, спустя), walked around (прошелся вокруг), and said (и сказал), “I’m a useless man (я никчемный человек; useless – бесполезный, тщетный; непригодный, никуда негодный) if I can’t find shelter in some place (если я не смогу найти приюта где-нибудь: «в каком-либо месте»).”

 But he swam on some distance yet, till at last he saw land. The pig went up on an island; the king too went on shore, and said to himself: “Oh! it is for no good that I came here; there is neither house nor shelter to be seen.” But he cheered up after a while, walked around, and said, “I’m a useless man if I can’t find shelter in some place.”
