I'm a realist now. I've abandoned romanticism; I shall go back to it later though, when my own adventurous future begins.

This new book is going to get itself finished — and published! You see if it doesn't. If you just want a thing hard enough and keep on trying, you do get it in the end. I've been trying for four years to get a letter from you — and I haven't given up hope yet.

Poor old Grove is dead (бедный старый Гров издох). He got so that he couldn't chew (он стал таким, что не мог жевать) and they had to shoot him (и его пришлось пристрелить; to shoot — стрелять, вести огонь; попасть, поразить /из огнестрельного оружия/).

Nine chickens were killed (девять цыплят были забиты; to kill — убивать, лишать жизни; забивать, резать /скот/) by a weasel (горностаем) or a skunk (или скунсом) or a rat last week (или крысой на прошлой неделе).

One of the cows is sick (одна из коров больна), and we had to have the veterinary surgeon out from Bonnyrigg Four Corners (и нам пришлось вызвать ветеринарного врача из Бонниригг Фор Корнерса; surgeon — хирург). Amasai stayed up all night (Амасей не ложился спать всю ночь) to give her linseed oil and whisky (чтобы давать ей масло из льняного семени и виски). But we have an awful suspicion (но у нас ужасные подозрения) that the poor sick cow got nothing but linseed oil (что бедной больной корове не досталось ничего, кроме льняного масла).

Sentimental Tommy (the tortoise-shell cat) has disappeared (Сентиментальный Томми (пестрый кот) исчез; tortoise-shell — панцирь черепахи; пестрая кошка); we are afraid he has been caught in a trap (мы боимся, что он попался: «был пойман» в капкан).

There are lots of troubles in the world (как много напастей в этом мире)!

This is going to be extremely short (это будет чрезвычайно короткое /письмо/) because my shoulder aches at the sight of a pen (так как мое плечо болит при виде ручки). I think you might come and make my acquaintance (мне кажется, что вы могли бы приехать и познакомиться со мной; acquaintance — знакомство) — I shall hate you if you don't (я возненавижу вас, если вы не /приедете/)! Julia's inviting Master Jervie (Джулия приглашает мастера Джерви), he being her family (/поскольку/ он /член/ ее семьи = ее родственник), and Sallie's inviting Jimmie McB., he being her family (и Салли приглашает Джимми Макбрайда, /поскольку/ он /из/ ее семьи), but who is there for me to invite (но кого же мне приглашать)? Just you and Lippett (только вас и Липпетт), and I don't want her (а я не хочу /приглашать/ ее). Please come (пожалуйста, приезжайте).
