"We are on our way to the Emerald City to see the Great Oz," she answered, "and we stopped at your cottage to pass the night."

"Why do you wish to see Oz?" he asked.

"I want him to send me back to Kansas, and the Scarecrow wants him to put a few brains into his head," she replied.

The Tin Woodman appeared to think deeply for a moment. Then he said: "Do you suppose Oz could give me a heart?"

"Why, I guess so," Dorothy answered. "It would be as easy as to give the Scarecrow brains."

"True (правда)," the Tin Woodman returned. "So, if you will allow me to join your party (тогда, если вы позволите мне присоединиться к вашей компании), I will also go to the Emerald City and ask Oz to help me (я тоже пойду в Изумрудный город и попрошу Оза помочь мне)."

"Come along (идем /с нами/)," said the Scarecrow heartily (сердечно/с воодушевлением сказал Страшила; heartily — искренне, сердечно; от всего сердца), and Dorothy added that she would be pleased to have his company (и Дороти добавила, что она будет польщена его обществом; pleased — довольный). So the Tin Woodman shouldered his axe (тогда Железный Дровосек положил на плечо свой топор; shoulder — плечо; to shoulder — взваливать на плечо) and they all passed through the forest (и все они зашагали по лесу) until they came to the road that was paved with yellow brick (пока они не пришли к дороге, которая была выложена желтым кирпичом).

The Tin Woodman had asked Dorothy to put the oil-can in her basket (Железный Дровосек попросил Дороти положить масленку в ее корзину; to ask — спрашивать; просить).

"For (ибо)," he said, "if I should get caught in the rain, and rust again (если я попаду под дождь и снова заржавею; to catch — заманивать в ловушку, ловить /на чем-либо/; захватывать /о дожде, шторме и т. п./; to be caught in the rain — попасть под дождь: «быть пойманным в дожде = захваченным дождем»), I would need the oil-can badly (мне сильно понадобится масленка; to need — нуждаться /в чем-либо/; иметь надобность, потребность)."

It was a bit of good luck to have their new comrade join the party (им повезло, что их новый друг присоединился к их компании; bit — кусочек; частица, небольшое количество; a bit of — немного; good luck — счастливый случай, удача), for soon after they had begun their journey again (так как вскоре после того, как они снова начали свое путешествие) they came to a place where the trees and branches grew so thick over the road (они пришли к такому месту, где деревья и ветки столь густо росли над дорогой) that the travelers could not pass (что путешественники не могли пройти). But the Tin Woodman set to work with his axe and chopped so well (но Железный Дровосек принялся работать топором, и рубил он так хорошо; to set to work — приняться за дело, начать работать) that soon he cleared a passage for the entire party (что вскоре расчистил проход для всей компании; to clear — очищать; освобождать, устранять препятствия; to pass — проходить).
