Oz ordered the balloon carried out in front of the Palace (Оз приказал вынести воздушный шар /и установить его/ перед Дворцом), and the people gazed upon it with much curiosity (и люди глазели на него с большим любопытством). The Tin Woodman had chopped a big pile of wood (Железный Дровосек нарубил большую кучу дров), and now he made a fire of it (и затем он развел из них костер), and Oz held the bottom of the balloon over the fire (и Оз /стал/ держать дно воздушного шара над огнем) so that the hot air that arose from it would be caught in the silken bag (так что горячий воздух, который поднимался от него, оказывался: «был бы пойман/уловлен» в шелковом мешке; to catch — ловить, поймать).

The balloon was by this time tugging hard at the rope that held it to the ground (к тому времени воздушный шар уже сильно натягивал веревку, которой он был привязан к земле: «которая удерживала его у земли»; to tug — тащить, тянуть с усилием; дергать, тянуть), for the air within it was hot (потому что воздух внутри него был горячим), and this made it so much lighter in weight than the air without (и это делало его гораздо легче /по весу/, чем воздух снаружи) that it pulled hard to rise into the sky (и он сильно рвался подняться в небо;to pull — тянуть, натягивать).
