'Their heads are gone, if it please your Majesty (их головы слетели/ушли, с позволения Вашего Величества; to go — идти, ходить; исчезнуть, пропасть)!' the soldiers shouted in reply (прокричали солдаты в ответ).

'That's right (отлично)!' shouted the Queen. 'Can you play croquet (ты умеешь играть в крокет)?'

The soldiers were silent, and looked at Alice (солдаты промолчали и взглянули на Алису), as the question was evidently meant for her (так как вопрос очевидно предназначался ей; to mean — намереваться, иметь в виду; предназначать).

gone [gPn], croquet ['krqVkeI], evidently ['evIdqntlI]

'Are their heads off?' shouted the Queen.

'Their heads are gone, if it please your Majesty!' the soldiers shouted in reply.

'That's right!' shouted the Queen. 'Can you play croquet?'

The soldiers were silent, and looked at Alice, as the question was evidently meant for her.

'Yes!' shouted Alice.

'Come on, then (тогда пошли)!' roared the Queen, and Alice joined the procession (проревела Королева, и Алиса присоединилась к процессии), wondering very much what would happen next (чрезвычайно желая узнать, что же будет дальше; to happen — случаться, происходить).

'It's—it's a very fine day (какой, какой весьма погожий денек сегодня)!' said a timid voice at her side (произнес робкий голосок рядом с ней; side — сторона; бок; место рядом). She was walking by the White Rabbit (она шла рядом с Белым Кроликом), who was peeping anxiously into her face (который с тревогой заглядывал ей в лицо).

'Very (очень),' said Alice: '—where's the Duchess (а где Герцогиня)?'

roar [rO:], join [dZOIn], peeping ['pi:pIN]

'Yes!' shouted Alice.

'Come on, then!' roared the Queen, and Alice joined the procession, wondering very much what would happen next.

'It's-it's a very fine day!' said a timid voice at her side. She was walking by the White Rabbit, who was peeping anxiously into her face.

'Very,' said Alice: '—where's the Duchess?'

'Hush (тише)! Hush!' said the Rabbit in a low, hurried tone (поспешно сказал Кролик тихим голосом). He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke (он беспокойно оглянулся через плечо, пока говорил), and then raised himself upon tiptoe (а затем поднялся на цыпочки), put his mouth close to her ear, and whispered (приблизил свой рот к ее уху и прошептал) 'She's under sentence of execution (она приговорена к казни; sentence — приговор суда; наказание, мера наказания; execution — выполнение, исполнение; /смертная/ казнь).'

'What for (за что)?' said Alice.

hush [hAS], raised ['reIzd], tiptoe ['tIptqV], sentence ['sentqns]

'Hush! Hush!' said the Rabbit in a low, hurried tone. He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke, and then raised himself upon tiptoe, put his mouth close to her ear, and whispered 'She's under sentence of execution.'

'What for?' said Alice.

'Did you say "What a pity!" (ты сказала: "Как жаль!")?' the Rabbit asked.

'No, I didn't (нет, я не говорила /этого/),' said Alice: 'I don't think it's at all a pity (я вовсе и не думаю, что мне жаль; pity — жалость, сострадание; печальный факт; it is a pity — жаль). I said "What for?" (я сказала: "За что?")'

'She boxed the Queen's ears (она надрала Королеве уши; to box — боксировать; ударить /рукой или кулаком/)—' the Rabbit began. Alice gave a little scream of laughter (Алиса тихонько хихикнула; scream — пронзительный крик, вопль; scream of laughter — взрыв смеха). 'Oh, hush (о, тише)!' the Rabbit whispered in a frightened tone (прошептал Кролик испуганным голосом). 'The Queen will hear you (Королева тебя услышит)! You see, she came rather late, and the Queen said (понимаешь, она /Герцогиня/ пришла довольно поздно, а Королева сказала)—'
