Читаем Английский язык с миссис Харрис, или Платье от Диора полностью

By late afternoon (ближе к вечеру), when at last Mrs. Harris was done with measuring and fitting (когда, наконец, миссис Харрис была уставшей от измерений и примерок; done — сделанный; уставший), the most remote corner of the establishment (самый отдаленный уголок учреждения) had heard the tale of the London charwoman (уже услышал об истории лондонской уборщицы) who had saved her wages (которая скопила свое жалование) and journeyed to Paris to buy herself a Dior dress (и приехала в Париж, чтобы купить себе платье от Диора) and she was in the way of becoming something of a celebrity (и она становилась: «была на пути становления» своего рода знаменитостью). Members of the staff from the lowest to the highest (члены штата = персонал от самых низких до самых высших), including the Patron himself (включая самого шефа), had managed an excuse to pass by the cubicle (нашли предлог, чтобы пройти мимо кабинки; to manage — управлять; суметь сделать) to catch a glimpse of this remarkable Englishwoman (чтобы увидеть мельком эту удивительную англичанку; to catch — ловить; поймать; glimpse — проблеск, слабый свет, слабая вспышка; мелькание; мимолетное впечатление).

celebrity [sI'lebrItI], excuse [Iks'kju:s], remarkable [rI'mQ:kqbl]

By late afternoon, when at last Mrs. Harris was done with measuring and fitting, the most remote corner of the establishment had heard the tale of the London charwoman who had saved her wages and journeyed to Paris to buy herself a Dior dress and she was in the way of becoming something of a celebrity. Members of the staff from the lowest to the highest, including the Patron himself, had managed an excuse to pass by the cubicle to catch a glimpse of this remarkable Englishwoman.

And later (и позже), while for the last time Mrs. Harris was encased in the model (когда в последний раз миссис Харрис была облачена в образец), Natasha herself (Наташа лично), clad in a neat cocktail frock (одетая в изящное коктейльное платье; neat — четкий/ясный; изящный), for she was about to start out on a round of evening engagements (так как она собиралась отправиться на ряд вечерних встреч/свиданий), came and saw nothing unusual or grotesque (пришла и /не/ увидела ничего необычного или гротескного) in the figure of the charwoman in the beautiful creation (в фигуре уборщицы в красивом наряде: «творении»), for she had heard the story (потому что она слышала историю) and felt herself touched by it (и почувствовала себя тронутой ею). She understood Mrs. Harris (она понимала миссис Харрис). "I am so glad you have chosen that one (я так рада, что вы выбрали это)," she said simply (сказала она просто).

engagement [In'geIdZmqnt], beautiful ['bju:tqful], chosen [tSquzn]

And later, while for the last time Mrs. Harris was encased in the model, Natasha herself, clad in a neat cocktail frock, for she was about to start out on a round of evening engagements, came and saw nothing unusual or grotesque in the figure of the charwoman in the beautiful creation, for she had heard the story and felt herself touched by it. She understood Mrs. Harris. "I am so glad you have chosen that one," she said simply.

When the latter suddenly said (когда последняя вдруг сказала): "Coo, 'owever am I going to get to this Mr. Fauvel (ой, как же я доберусь к этому мсье Фовелю)? He gave me 'is address (он дал мне свой адрес), but I wouldn't know where it was (но я не имею представления, где это)", Natasha was the first to offer to take her thither (Наташа была первой, чтобы предложить подвезти ее туда).

"I have a little car (у меня есть маленькая машина); I will drive you there myself (я отвезу вас туда сама). Let me see where it is (дайте мне взглянуть, где это)."

Mrs. Harris handed her the card (миссис Харрис передала ей карточку) M. Fauvel had given her with the address (которую мсье Фовель дал ей с адресом), "No. 18 Rue Dennequin (№ 3, ул. Деннекен)". Natasha wrinkled her pretty forehead over the name (Наташа наморщила свой прелестный лоб над именем). "Monsieur André Fauvel," she repeated (повторила она). "Now where have I heard that name before (постойте, где я слышала это имя прежде)?"
