Nor could he hear anywhere of the beggar-woman who was his mother, though for the space of three years he wandered over the world, and often seemed to see her on the road in front of him, and would call to her, and run after her till the sharp flints made his feet to bleed. But overtake her he could not, and those who dwelt by the way did ever deny that they had seen her, or any like to her, and they made sport of his sorrow.

For the space of three years (целых три года) he wandered over the world (он бродил по всему свету), and in the world (и во всем мире) there was neither love (не было ни любви) nor loving-kindness (ни милосердия) nor charity for him (ни сострадания к нему; charity — благотворительность; милосердие, отзывчивость), but it was even such a world (но это был точно такой мир) as he had made for himself (который он сам создал для себя) in the days of his great pride (в дни своей великой гордыни; pride — гордость; спесь, заносчивость).

loving-kindness ["lAvIN'kaIndnIs] charity ['tSxrItI]

For the space of three years he wandered over the world, and in the world there was neither love nor loving-kindness nor charity for him, but it was even such a world as he had made for himself in the days of his great pride.

And one evening (однажды вечером) he came to the gate of a strong-walled city (он пришел к воротам города, обнесенного крепкими стенами; strong — сильный, прочный, wall — стена, ограда, walled — обнесенный стеной) that stood by a river (что стоял у реки; to stand (stood) — стоять, находиться), and, weary and footsore though he was (и, хотя он был усталым и ноги его были стерты; footsore — со стертыми ногами, sore — болезненный, чувствительный), he made to enter in (он попытался войти в город; to make to do smth. — пытаться, порываться сделать что-либо). But the soldiers who stood on guard (но солдаты, что стояли в карауле; guard — охрана, стража, караул) dropped their halberts across the entrance (опустили свои алебарды крест-накрест у входа = перекрыли вход алебардами, скрестив их; to drop — капать; ронять, бросать), and said roughly to him (и грубо сказали ему), 'What is thy business in the city (какое у тебя дело в городе = зачем тебе в город)?'

walled [wO:ld] footsore ['fVtsO:] soldier ['sqVldZq] guard [gQ:d]

halbert ['hxlbet] entrance ['entrqns]

And one evening he came to the gate of a strong-walled city that stood by a river, and, weary and footsore though he was, he made to enter in. But the soldiers who stood on guard dropped their halberts across the entrance, and said roughly to him, 'What is thy business in the city?'

'I am seeking for my mother (я ищу мою мать),' he answered (ответил он), 'and I pray ye (и я прошу вас; ye = you) to suffer me to pass (позволить мне пройти), for it may be (так как может быть) that she is in this city (что она в этом городе).'
