“You will kindly close the door (закройте, пожалуйста, дверь),” said Holmes. “Now, Bannister, will you please tell us the truth about yesterday’s incident (а теперь, Бэннистер, не расскажете ли нам правду о вчерашнем случае)?”

The man turned white to the roots of his hair (слуга побледнел до корней волос).

“I have told you everything, sir (я все вам рассказал, сэр).”

“I think so. If this matter is not to become public, we must give ourselves certain powers and resolve ourselves into a small private court-martial. You there, if you please, Soames! Watson you here! I’ll take the armchair in the middle. I think that we are now sufficiently imposing to strike terror into a guilty breast. Kindly ring the bell!”

“You will kindly close the door,” said Holmes. “Now, Bannister, will you please tell us the truth about yesterday’s incident?”

The man turned white to the roots of his hair.

“I have told you everything, sir.”

“Nothing to add (/вам/ нечего добавить)?”

“Nothing at all, sir (совсем ничего, сэр).”

“Well, then, I must make some suggestions to you (что ж, тогда я должен буду высказать вам кое-какие свои предположения; to make a suggestion — подать мысль; внести предложение). When you sat down on that chair yesterday (когда вы сели в это кресло вчера), did you do so in order to conceal some object (вы сделали это, чтобы скрыть какой-то предмет) which would have shown who had been in the room (который мог бы указать, кто побывал в комнате = разоблачить незваного гостя; to show-showed-shown — показывать)?”

Bannister’s face was ghastly (лицо Бэннистера было мертвенно-бледным).

“No, sir, certainly not (нет, сэр, конечно, нет).”

“It is only a suggestion (это только предположение),” said Holmes, suavely (мягко произнес Холмс; suavely — учтиво, вежливо, обходительно). “I frankly admit that I am unable to prove it (откровенно признаюсь, я не могу этого доказать). But it seems probable enough (но это представляется весьма вероятным), since the moment that Mr. Soames’s back was turned (поскольку как только спина мистер Сомса повернулась = как только мистер Сомс вышел), you released the man who was hiding in that bedroom (вы выпустили человека, который прятался в этой спальне).”

“It is only a suggestion,” said Holmes, suavely. “I frankly admit that I am unable to prove it. But it seems probable enough, since the moment that Mr. Soames’s back was turned, you released the man who was hiding in that bedroom.”

Bannister licked his dry lips (Бэннистер облизал сухие губы).

“There was no man, sir (там никого не было, сэр).”

“Ah, that’s a pity, Bannister (жаль /это слышать/, Бэннистер; pity — жалость). Up to now you may have spoken the truth (до сих пор вы, быть может, говорили правду), but now I know that you have lied (но теперь я знаю, что вы солгали).”
