Cooper gave a harsh laugh (Купер неприятно рассмеялся; to give a laugh— рассмеяться;harsh— жесткий, твердый, грубый; неприятный). "They tried to blackmail me (они пытались меня шантажировать). They had the damned cheek to run away, all except that incompetent fellow Abas (они имели наглость сбежать/удрать — все, кроме того неумелого малого = бестолкового Абаса) — he knew when he was well off — but I just sat tight (он знал = понимал, как ему повезло — но я просто выжидал; you don't know when you're well off— ты еще не знаешь, как тебе повезло;to sit tight— твердо держаться; не сдавать своих позиций; выжидать: «сидеть плотно»). They`ve all come to heel again (все они подчинились мне; come to heel— идти следом за хозяином /о собаке/; подчиниться;heel— пятка)."

"What do you mean by that (что вы имеете в виду)?"

Mr. Warburton expected that his subordinate would take the first opportunity to apologise for his rudeness, but Cooper had the ill-bred man`s inability to express regret; and when they met next morning in the office he ignored the incident. Since Mr. Warburton had been away for three weeks it was necessary for them to have a somewhat prolonged interview. At the end of it, Mr. Warburton dismissed him.

"I don`t think there`s anything else, thank you." Cooper turned to go, but Mr. Warburton stopped him. "I understand you`ve been having some trouble with your boys."

Cooper gave a harsh laugh. "They tried to blackmail me. They had the damned cheek to run away, all except that incompetent fellow Abas — he knew when he was well off — but I just sat tight. They`ve all come to heel again."

"What do you mean by that?"

"This morning they were all back on their jobs, the Chinese cook and all (сегодня: «этим» утром все они вернулись на свои места: «работы» — китайский повар и все /остальные/). There they were, as cool as cucumbers (я вам говорю: «они были там», невозмутимые; as cool as cucumbers— невозмутимый, спокойный, хладнокровный); you would have thought they owned the place (можно подумать, им принадлежит дом; place— место; жилище, усадьба, загородный дом). I suppose they`d come to the conclusion that I wasn`t such fool as I looked (я полагаю, они пришли к выводу, что я не так глуп, как выгляжу)."

"By no means (отнюдь нет; by no means— никоим образом не; отнюдь нет). They came back on my express order (они вернулись по моему специальному распоряжению)."

Cooper flushed slightly (Купер слегка покраснел).

"I should be obliged if you wouldn`t interfere with my private concerns (я был бы признателен: «одолжен», если бы вы не вмешивались в мои личные дела)."
