Three weeks passed (прошло три недели). Still she refused to give up the knife (она по-прежнему отказывалась отдать нож; to give up – сдаться; сдать, уступить /что-л. кому-л./; выдать /беглеца и т. д./); and still that fear of sleeping in the same room with her possessed me (и по-прежнему тот страх спать с ней в одной комнате владел мной). I walked about at night (я бродил ночью), or dozed in the parlor (или дремал в гостиной), or sat watching by my mother’s bedside (или сидел у постели матушки; to watch – наблюдать; стеречь, охранять; дежурить /у постели больного/). Before the end of the first week in the new month (до конца первой недели в новом месяце), the worst misfortune of all befell me – my mother died (меня постигло худшее из всех несчастье – умерла матушка; to befall – случаться /с кем-л./, выпадать /на чью-л. долю/). It wanted then but a short time to my birthday (до дня моего рождения тогда оставалось совсем немного времени: «короткое время»; to want – хотеть; испытывать недостаток /чего-л./; нуждаться /в чем-л./). She had longed to live till that day (она очень хотела дожить до этого дня; to long – очень хотеть, страстно желать /чего-л./). I was present at her death (я был рядом при ее смерти). Her last words in this world were addressed to me (ее последние слова в этом мире были обращены ко мне). “Don’t go back, my son – don’t go back (не возвращайся, сынок, не возвращайся /туда/)!”
