Пикок верно указал (неопубликованная рукопись), что в антропологических исследованиях таких тем, как символическое переворачивание и дуализм, усиленно размышляли над вопросом: «Как и почему эти системы были трансформированы и разрушены натиском современного общества?» Перед лицом этой проблемы, как и перед лицом других, которые мы кратко перечислили, антропология показала себя либо безразличной, либо бессильной.

Однако символическая классификация, как бы ни была она истощена, никогда не умирает. «Символизм не просто праздная фантазия или разрушительная дегенерация: он содержится в самой ткани человеческой жизни» (Whitehead, 1927, р. 61–62). В этой вязкой и неподатливой сфере социального опыта, в формах, которые принимают символические категории, мы имеем дело с тем, что оказывается первичной и неустранимой склонностью мышления и воображения.
