White Fang enjoyed it all. He did not love his kind, and he was shrewd enough to escape hurt himself.	Белый Клык упивался всем этим, он не жалел своих собратьев, а сам ухитрялся оставаться в таких стычках невредимым.

So White Fang hung around the landing with the disreputable gang of Indian dogs, waiting for steamers.	И Белый Клык слонялся по пристани, поджидая вместе со сворой беспутных индейских собак прибытия пароходов.
With the arrival of a steamer the fun began.	Как только пароход причаливал к берегу, начиналась потеха.
After a few minutes, by the time the white men had got over their surprise, the gang scattered. The fun was over until the next steamer should arrive.	К тому времени, когда белые люди приходили в себя от неожиданности, собачья свора разбегалась в разные стороны и ожидала следующего парохода.
But it can scarcely be said that White Fang was a member of the gang.	Однако Белого Клыка нельзя было считать членом собачьей своры.

He picked the quarrel with the strange dog while the gang waited.	Он затевал ссору с чужаком и сбивал его с ног.
And when he had overthrown the strange dog the gang went in to finish it. But it is equally true that he then withdrew, leaving the gang to receive the punishment of the outraged gods.	Тогда собаки кидались и приканчивали чужака, а Белый Клык сейчас же удирал, предоставляя своре получать наказание от разгневанных богов.
It did not require much exertion to pick these quarrels.	Для того чтобы затеять такую ссору, не требовалось большого труда.
All he had to do, when the strange dogs came ashore, was to show himself. When they saw him they rushed for him.	Белому Клыку стоило только показаться на пристани, когда чужие собаки сходили на берег, -- и этого было достаточно, они кидались на него.
It was their instinct.	Так повелевал им инстинкт.
He was the Wild-the unknown, the terrible, the ever-menacing, the thing that prowled in the darkness around the fires of the primeval world when they, cowering close to the fires, were reshaping their instincts, learning to fear the Wild out of which they had come, and which they had deserted and betrayed.	Собаки чуяли в Белом Клыке Северную глушь, неизвестное, ужас, вечную угрозу; чуяли в нем то, что ходило, крадучись, во мраке, окружающем человеческие костры, когда они, подобравшись к этим кострам, отказывались от своих прежних инстинктов и боялись Северной глуши, покинутой и преданной ими.
Generation by generation, down all the generations, had this fear of the Wild been stamped into their natures.	От поколения к поколению передавался собакам этот страх перед Северной глушью.
