Endless depression glowed in the head's eyes.	В глазах головы светилась безграничная тоска.
The eyes begged, pleaded, demanded.	Глаза просили, умоляли, требовали.
It seemed that the entire power of human thought, all the tension of the will, were concentrated in that look.	Казалось, вся сила человеческой мысли, всё напряжение воли сосредоточились в этом взгляде.
Laurent decided.	Лоран решилась.
Her heart was pounding, her hand shook as she cautiously turned the valve.	Её сердце сильно билось, рука дрожала, когда она осторожно приоткрывала кран.
A hissing sound immediately came from the head's throat.	Тотчас из горла головы послышалось шипение.
Laurent heard a weak, soft, cracked voice, quivering and hissing like a broken gramophone:	Лоран услышала слабый, глухой, надтреснутый голос, дребезжащий и шипящий, как испорченный граммофон:

The forbidden valve let in compressed air from the cylinder.	Запретный кран пропускал сжатый в цилиндре воздух.
Passing through the throat, the air brought the vocal cords into action, and the head was able to speak.	Проходя через горло головы, воздух приводил в движение горловые связки, и голова получала возможность говорить.
The throat muscles and vocal cords could no longer work normally: the air hissed through the throat even when the head wasn't speaking.	Мышцы горла и связки не могли уже работать нормально: воздух с шипением проходил через горло и тогда, когда голова не говорила.
The severing of the nerves in the neck interfered with the normal action of the muscles of the vocal cords and gave the voice a hollow, jangling timbre.	А рассечение нервных стволов в области шеи нарушало нормальную работу мышц голосовых связок и придавало голосу глухой, дребезжащий тембр.
The head's face looked satisfied.	Лицо головы выражало удовлетворение.
But at that moment came footsteps and the sound of a key in the lock (the laboratory's door was always locked from the study side).	Но в этот момент послышались шаги из кабинета и звук открываемого замка (дверь лаборатории всегда закрывалась ключом со стороны кабинета).
Laurent barely had time to shut off the valve.	Лоран едва успела закрыть кран.
The hissing in the head's throat stopped.	Шипение в горле головы прекратилось.
