Кто из родителей способен сжечь свое возлюбленное чадо? Кто из детей возведет своих родителей на этот костер, ста ярдов в поперечнике, ста футов глубиной?
No, if there was anything left in the world, it was his vow that she would not be burned in the fire.	Нет. Если осталось еще хоть что-то в этом мире, то, покуда это в его власти, тело ее не будет предано огню.
An hour passed before he finally reached a decision.	Лишь час спустя он пришел к окончательному решению.
Then he went and got her needle and thread.	Тогда он взял иголку с ниткой - ее иголку. Ее нитку.
He kept sewing until only her face showed.	И шил, пока на виду осталось только ее лицо.
Then, fingers trembling, a tight knot in his stomach, he sewed the blanket together over her mouth.	И тогда, скрепя сердце, трясущимися руками он зашил полотнище у ее рта.
Over her nose.	У ее носа.
Her eyes.	У ее глаз.
Finished, he went in the kitchen and drank another glass of whisky. It didn't seem to affect him at all.	Закончив, вышел на кухню и влил в себя еще бокал виски, но оно не действовало.
At last he went back to the bedroom on faltering legs.	Он едва держался на ногах.
For a long minute he stood there breathing hoarsely. Then he bent over and worked his arms under her inert form.	Вернувшись в спальню, он постоял немного, хрипло дыша, затем, согнувшись, подсунул руки под ее недвижное тело и взял ее, одними губами шепча:
"Come on, baby," he whispered.	- Иди ко мне, детка...
The words seemed to loosen everything.	Слова словно освободили что-то внутри него.
He felt himself shaking, felt the tears running slowly down his cheeks as he carried her through the living room and outside.	Он почувствовал, что его трясет, слезы бегут по его щекам... Через гостиную - на крыльцо - на улицу...
He put her in the back seat and got in the car.	Он положил ее на заднее сиденье и сел в машину.
He took a deep breath and reached for the starter button.	Сделав глубокий вдох, потянулся к стартеру.
He drew back.	Стоп.
Getting out of the car again, he went into the garage and got the shovel.	Он снова вышел из машины, сходил в гараж и взял лопату.
He twitched as he came out, seeing the man across the street approaching slowly. He put the shovel in the back and got in the car.	Заметив на улице медленно приближающегося человека, он вздрогнул, сунул лопату под заднее сиденье и сел в машину.
"Wait!" The man's shout was hoarse.	- Постойте!.. - глухо вскрикнув, тот человек попытался бежать, но не смог.
The man tried to run, but he wasn't strong enough.	Он был слишком слаб и еле волочил ноги.
