The trumpets played again (трубы затрубили/зазвучали снова) and then there was silence for many minutes (а затем наступила тишина на много минут = наступила долгая тишина) as the crowd looked around for the champion (пока толпа оглядывалась, ища защитника).

The trumpets played and a herald came forward into the lists.

"Here stands the good knight, Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert," shouted the herald, "ready to fight against any knight who will be the champion of the Jewess." The trumpets played again and then there was silence for many minutes as the crowd looked around for the champion.

"No champion appears for the accused woman (ни один защитник не явился, /чтобы драться/ за эту обвиненную женщину; to appear — показываться, появляться)," said the Grand Master. "Go, herald, and ask her (пойди, герольд, и спроси у нее) whether she expects anyone to fight for her (ожидает ли она кого-нибудь, кто будет драться за нее)."

The herald walked over to Rebecca's chair (герольд подошел к стулу Ревекки). "Girl (девушка)," he said, "the honourable Grand Master asks (достопочтенный великий магистр спрашивает; honourable — благородный, великодушный; достопочтенный /титул/) if you have found a champion to fight for you (нашла ли ты защитника, который дрался бы за тебя), or if you confess your guilt instead (или ты признаешь свою вину вместо этого; to confess — признавать; признаваться, сознаваться; guilt — вина, виновность)?"

"No champion appears for the accused woman," said the Grand Master. "Go, herald, and ask her whether she expects anyone to fight for her."

The herald walked over to Rebecca's chair.

"Girl," he said, "the honourable Grand Master asks if you have found a champion to fight for you, or if you confess your guilt instead?"

"Tell the Grand Master (скажите великому магистру)," replied Rebecca, "that I am innocent (что я невиновна), and that I expect a champion to come and fight for me (и я ожидаю, что защитник придет и будет драться за меня), if God so wishes (если Бог так пожелает)."

The herald went back (герольд вернулся; to go back — возвращаться, приходить назад) and repeated her answer to the Grand Master (и повторил ее ответ великому магистру).

"Tell her that we shall wait for a champion until evening (скажите ей, что мы будем ждать защитника до вечера)," said the Grand Master. "If this day passes without the arrival of a champion (если этот день пройдет без прибытия защитника = если день пройдет, а защитник не прибудет; to pass — идти, проходить, проезжать; идти, проходить, пролетать /о времени/), then prepare her for her death (тогда подготовьте ее к смерти)."

"Tell her that we shall wait for a champion until evening," said the Grand Master. "If this day passes without the arrival of a champion, then prepare her for her death."

The herald went back to Rebecca (герольд пошел назад = вернулся к Ребекке) and gave her the Grand Master's message (и передал ей сообщение = слова великого магистра).
