He sputtered a little, and seemed vexed.	Король запутался и, кажется, даже немного рассердился.
For what the king fundamentally insisted upon was that his authority should be respected.	Ведь для короля самое важное - чтобы ему повиновались беспрекословно.
He tolerated no disobedience.	Непокорства он бы не потерпел.
He was an absolute monarch.	Это был абсолютный монарх.
But, because he was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable.	Но он был очень добр, а потому отдавал только разумные приказания.
"If I ordered a general," he would say, by way of example, "if I ordered a general to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not obey me, that would not be the fault of the general. It would be my fault."	"Если я повелю своему генералу обернуться морской чайкой, - говаривал он, - и если генерал не выполнит приказа, это будет не его вина, а моя".
"May I sit down?" came now a timid inquiry from the little prince.	- Можно мне сесть? - робко спросил Маленький принц.
"I order you to do so," the king answered him, and majestically gathered in a fold of his ermine mantle.	- Повелеваю: сядь! - отвечал король и величественно подобрал одну полу своей горностаевой мантии.
But the little prince was wondering...	Но Маленький принц недоумевал.
The planet was tiny.	Планетка такая крохотная.
Over what could this king really rule?	Где же тут царствовать?
"Sire," he said to him, "I beg that you will excuse my asking you a question - "	- Ваше величество, - начал он, - позвольте вас спросить...
"I order you to ask me a question," the king hastened to assure him.	- Повелеваю: спрашивай! - поспешно сказал король.
"Sire - over what do you rule?"	- Ваше величество... Где же ваше королевство?
"Over everything," said the king, with magnificent simplicity.	- Везде, - просто ответил король.
"Over everything?"	- Везде?
The king made a gesture, which took in his planet, the other planets, and all the stars.	Король повел рукою, скромно указывая на свою планету, а также и на другие планеты, и на звезды.
"Over all that?" asked the little prince.	- И все это ваше? - переспросил Маленький принц.
"Over all that," the king answered.	- Да, - отвечал король.
For his rule was not only absolute: it was also universal.	Ибо он был поистине полновластный монарх и не знал никаких пределов и ограничений.
"And the stars obey you?"	- И звезды вам повинуются? - спросил Маленький принц.
"Certainly they do," the king said.	- Ну конечно, - отвечал король.
"They obey instantly.	- Звезды повинуются мгновенно.
