When the little prince arrived on the Earth, he was very much surprised not to see any people.	Итак, попав на Землю, Маленький принц не увидел ни души и очень удивился.
He was beginning to be afraid he had come to the wrong planet, when a coil of gold, the color of the moonlight, flashed across the sand.	Он подумал даже, что залетел по ошибке на какую-то другую планету. Но тут в песке шевельнулось колечко цвета лунного луча.
"Good evening," said the little prince courteously.	- Добрый вечер, - сказал на всякий случай Маленький принц.
"Good evening," said the snake.	- Добрый вечер, - ответила змея.
"What planet is this on which I have come down?" asked the little prince.	- На какую это планету я попал?
"This is the Earth; this is Africa," the snake answered.	- На Землю, - сказала змея. - В Африку.
"Ah!	- Вот как.
Then there are no people on the Earth?"	А разве на Земле нет людей?
"This is the desert.	- Это пустыня.
There are no people in the desert.	В пустынях никто не живет.
The Earth is large," said the snake.	Но Земля большая.
The little prince sat down on a stone, and raised his eyes toward the sky.	Маленький принц сел на камень и поднял глаза к небу.
"I wonder," he said, "whether the stars are set alight in heaven so that one day each one of us may find his own again...	- Хотел бы я знать, зачем звезды светятся, -задумчиво сказал он. - Наверно, затем, чтобы рано или поздно каждый мог снова отыскать свою.
Look at my planet. It is right there above us.	Смотри, вот моя планета - прямо над нами...
But how far away it is!"	Но как до нее далеко!
"It is beautiful," the snake said.	- Красивая планета, - сказала змея.
"What has brought you here?"	- А что ты будешь делать здесь, на Земле?
"I have been having some trouble with a flower," said the little prince.	- Я поссорился со своим цветком, - признался Маленький принц.
"Ah!" said the snake.	- А, вот оно что...
And they were both silent.	И оба умолкли.

"Where are the men?" the little prince at last took up the conversation again.	- А где же люди? - вновь заговорил наконец Маленький принц.
