Марсианские хроники

Tomas raised his hand and thought Hello! automatically but did not move his lips, for this was a Martian.	Томас поднял руку и мысленно уже крикнул: "Привет!", но губы его не шевельнулись. Потому что это был марсианин.
But Tomas had swum in blue rivers on Earth, with strangers passing on the road, and eaten in strange houses with strange people, and his weapon had always been his smile.	Но Томас плавал на Земле в голубых реках, вдоль которых шли незнакомые люди, вместе с чужими людьми ел в чужих домах, и всегда его лучшим оружием была улыбка.
He did not carry a gun.	Он не носил с собой пистолета.
And he did not feel the need of one now, even with the little fear that gathered about his heart at this moment	И сейчас Томас не чувствовал в нем нужды, хотя где-то под сердцем притаился страх.
The Martian's hands were empty too.	У марсианина тоже ничего не было в руках.
For a moment they looked across the cool air at each other.	Секунду они смотрели друг на друга сквозь прохладный воздух.
It was Tomis who moved first.	Первым решился Томас
"Hello!" he called.	- Привет! - сказал он
"Hello!" called the Martian in his own language.	- Привет! - сказал марсианин на своем языке.
They did not understand each other.	Они не поняли друг друга.
"Did you say hello?" they both asked.	- Вы сказали "здравствуйте"? - спросили оба одновременно.
"What did you say?" they said, each in a different tongue.	- Что вы сказали? - продолжали они, каждый на своем языке.
They scowled.	Оба нахмурились.
"Who are you?" said Tomas in English.	- Вы кто? - спросил Томас по-английски.
"What are you doing here?" In Martian; the stranger's lips moved.	- Что вы здесь делаете? - произнесли губы чужака по-марсиански.
"Where are you going?" they said, and looked bewildered.	- Куда вы едете? - спросили оба с озадаченным видом.
"I'm Tomas Gomez."	- Меня зовут Томас Гомес.
"I'm Muhe Ca."	- Меня зовут Мью Ка.
Neither understood, but they tapped their chests with the words and then it became clear.	Ни один из них не понял другого, но каждый постучал пальцем по своей груди, и смысл стал обоим ясен.
And then the Martian laughed.	Вдруг марсианин рассмеялся.
"Wait!"	- Подождите!
Tomas felt his head touched, but no hand had touched him.	Томас ощутил, как что-то коснулось его головы, хотя никто его не трогал.
"There!" said the Martian in English.	- Вот так! - сказал марсианин по-английски.
"That is better!"	- Теперь дело пойдет лучше!
"You learned my language, so quick!"	- Вы так быстро выучили мой язык?
"Nothing at all!"	- Ну что вы!
