"Who wants to see the Future, who ever does?	- Кому хочется увидеть Будущее? И кто его когда-либо увидит?
A man can face the Past, but to think - the pillars crumbled, you say?	Человек может лицезреть Прошлое, но чтобы... Вы говорите, колонны рухнули?
And the sea empty, and the canals dry, and the maidens dead, and the flowers withered?"	И море высохло, каналы пусты, девушки умерли, цветы завяли?
The Martian was silent, but then he looked on ahead.	- Марсианин смолк, но затем снова посмотрел на город.
"But there they are.	- Но вон же они!
I see them. Isn't that enough for me?	Я их вижу, и мне этого достаточно.
They wait for me now, no matter what you say."	Они ждут меня, что бы вы ни говорили.
And for Tomas the rockets, far away, waiting for him, and the town and the women from Earth.	Точно так же вдали ждали Томаса ракеты, и поселок, и женщины с Земли.
"We can never agree," he said.	- Мы никогда не согласимся друг с другом, -сказал он.
"Let us agree to disagree," said the Martian.	- Согласимся не соглашаться, - предложил марсианин.
"What does it matter who is Past or Future, if we are both alive, for what follows will follow, tomorrow or in ten thousand years.	- Прошлое, Будущее - не все ли равно, лишь бы мы оба жили, ведь то, что придет вслед за нами, все равно придет - завтра или через десять тысяч лет.
How do you know that those temples are not the temples of your own civilization one hundred centuries from now, tumbled and broken?	Откуда вы знаете, что эти храмы - не обломки вашей цивилизации через сто веков?
You do not know.	Не знаете.
Then don't ask.	Ну так и не спрашивайте.
But the night is very short.	Однако ночь коротка.
There go the festival fires in the sky, and the birds."	Вон рассыпался в небе праздничный фейерверк, взлетели птицы.
Tomas put out his hand.	Томас протянул руку.
The Martian did likewise in imitation.	Марсианин повторил его жест.
Their hands did not touch; they melted through each other.	Их руки не соприкоснулись - они растворились одна в другой.
"Will we meet again?"	- Мы еще встретимся?
"Who knows?	- Кто знает?
Perhaps some other night."	Возможно, когда-нибудь.
"I'd like to go with you to that festival."	- Хотелось бы мне побывать с вами на вашем празднике.
