Ahead of me, from a point on the ridge, I heard the sound of a man's voice shouting an order... and then there came the detonation of the artillery-pieces mounted on the Hill.	А впереди, с самого гребня холма, послышался голос офицера, отдавшего приказ, - и на этот приказ отозвались орудия, расставленные по всему склону.
Smoke poured down from them through the trees.	Сквозь деревья стал просачиваться дым.
More shots followed, from positions all along the ridge.	Выстрелы следовали один за другим - в канонаду включились все пушки, сколько их ни было на холме.
The noise was deafening, and the acrid cordite fumes burned in my throat.	Шум стоял оглушительный, от едкой пороховой гари у меня запершило в горле.
Ahead of me, showing through the trees, I could see the towers of Reynolds House.	Впереди, над деревьями, мелькнули башенки того самого дома, что прежде назывался "Дом Рейнольдса".
"Amelia!" I shouted again over the noise. "My dearest, come back!	- Амелия! - крикнул я, силясь перекрыть грохот орудий. - Любимая, вернись!
It is not safe!"	Там опасно!
"The Time Machine!	- Машина времени!
We can find the Time Machine!"	Мы можем перехватить машину времени!
I could see her ahead of me, brushing without regard for herself through the tangle of bushes and undergrowth towards the house.	Женская фигурка по-прежнему маячила далеко впереди - не щадя себя, Амелия продиралась к дому сквозь перепутанные ветки кустов, сквозь густую траву.
"No!" I screamed after her, in utter desperation. "Amelia!"	- Не ходи туда! - возопил я в полном отчаянии. -Амелия!...
Through the multitude of intervening events, across the seeming years and the millions of miles... a stark memory of our first journey to 1903.	С тех пор случилось множество событий, миновали годы, пролетели миллионы миль... И тем не менее в сознание острой вспышкой вернулась память о нашем первом путешествии в 1903 год.
I remembered the artillery shots, the smoke, the alien sirens, the woman running across the lawn, the face at the window, and then the consuming fire ...	Припомнились звуки канонады, дым, непривычная слуху перекличка марсиан, бегущая по траве женщина, прижатое к стеклу лицо, а там - всепожирающий огонь...
Destiny!	От судьбы не уйдешь.
I hurled myself after her, and saw her reach the edge of the overgrown lawn.	Я вновь пустился вдогонку за Амелией.
Amelia started to run across to the glass wall of the laboratory: a lithe, distant figure, already beyond any help, already doomed by the destiny I had not after all averted...	Она выбралась на запущенную лужайку и теперь бежала к стеклянной стене лаборатории; ей уже ничем не поможешь, она обречена на участь, которую мне так и по удалось предотвратить...
As I also reached the lawn, too breathless to shout again, I saw her come to the glass and stop by it, pressing her face against the panes.	Достигнув лужайки, я так запыхался, что кричать уже не мог и только смотрел, как Амелия приблизилась вплотную к стене и припала лицом к стеклу.
