I sat there; over my head a little bird was busily hopping about in the darkness of the leaves; a grey cat, stretching herself at full length, crept warily about the garden, and the first beetles were heavily droning in the air, which was still clear, though it was not light.	Я сидел; над моей головой в потемневшей листве хлопотливо ворошилась маленькая птичка; серая кошка, вытянув спину, осторожно кралась в сад, и первые жуки тяжело гудели в воздухе, еще прозрачном, хотя уже не светлом.
I sat and gazed at the window, and waited to see if it would open; it did open, and Zina?da appeared at it.	Я сидел и смотрел на окно -- и ждал, не отворится ли оно: точно -- оно отворилось, и в нем появилась Зинаида.
She had on a white dress, and she herself, her face, shoulders, and arms, were pale to whiteness.	На ней было белое платье -- и сама она, ее лицо, плечи, руки были бледны до белизны.
She stayed a long while without moving, and looked out straight before her from under her knitted brows.	Она долго осталась неподвижной и долго глядела неподвижно и прямо из-под сдвинутых бровей.
I had never known such a look on her.	Я и не знал за ней такого взгляда.
Then she clasped her hands tightly, raised them to her lips, to her forehead, and suddenly pulling her fingers apart, she pushed back her hair behind her ears, tossed it, and with a sort of determination nodded her head, and slammed-to the window.	Потом она стиснула руки, крепко-крепко, поднесла их к губам, ко лбу -- и вдруг, раздернув пальцы, откинула волосы от ушей, встряхнула ими и, с какой-то решительностью кивнув сверху вниз головой, захлопнула окно.
Three days later she met me in the garden.	Дня три спустя она встретила меня в саду.
I was turning away, but she stopped me of herself.	Я хотел уклониться в сторону, но она сама меня остановила.
'Give me your arm,' she said to me with her old affectionateness, 'it's a long while since we have had a talk together.'	-- Дайте мне руку, -- сказала она мне с прежней лаской, -- мы давно с вами не болтали.
I stole a look at her; her eyes were full of a soft light, and her face seemed as it were smiling through a mist.	Я взглянул на нее: глаза ее тихо светились и лицо улыбалось, точно сквозь дымку.
'Are you still not well?' I asked her.	-- Вы все еще нездоровы? -- спросил я ее.
'No, that's all over now,' she answered, and she picked a small red rose. 'I am a little tired, but that too will pass off.'	-- Нет, теперь все прошло, -- отвечала она и сорвала небольшую красную розу. -- Я немножко устала, но и это пройдет.
'And will you be as you used to be again?' I asked.	-- И вы опять будете такая же, как прежде? -спросил я.
Zina?da put the rose up to her face, and I fancied the reflection of its bright petals had fallen on her cheeks.	Зинаида поднесла розу к лицу -- и мне показалось, как будто отблеск ярких лепестков упал ей на щеки.
'Why, am I changed?' she questioned me.	-- Разве я изменилась? -- спросила она меня.
' Yes, you are changed,' I answered in a low voice.	-- Да, изменились, -- ответил я вполголоса.
'I have been cold to you, I know,' began Zina?da, 'but you mustn't pay attention to that ... I couldn't help it....	-- Я с вами была холодна -- я знаю, -- начала Зинаида, -- но вы не должны были обращать на это внимания...
Come, why talk about it!'	Я не могла иначе...
' You don't want me to love you, that's what it is!'	Ну, да что об этом говорить!
