«Знайшоў нарэшце “Сусветную энцыклапедыю наіўнага мастацтва” са згадкай пра KISH, YELENA. На будучыню: у артыкулах пра Кіш абавязкова даваць цытату на англійскай, бо англійская надае вагі.

“The works of Yelena Kish were discovered by the Minsk artist

V. Basalyga in the 1970s near Slutsk, a town not far from the Byelorussian capital of Minsk. Executed in oil on canvas in the 1930s and early 1940s, they were shown as rugs. The painting, decorative and naive, served as embellishment.

Like most naive artists, Kish sought to tell a story and display a familiar or fantasised world. Thus lions ramble beneath birch trees on the bank of a stream, in the midst of which floats a boat surrounded by white swans, with people garbed as characters from icons seated in it”.

“Though different, all these planes are organically interconnected. The ornamental frame is composed of stylized, brightly coloured two-dimensional flowers. Also in evidence are survivals of aspects of peasant folk-art genres such as painting on chests and on glass they are coupled with expression of semicultured urban aesthetic tastes, with preferences for pictures of moonlit landscapes, ponds with swans and the like. These characteristics features of old-time urban folklore bring to mind the itinerant painters who offered their naive pictures and “rugs” at fairs and market-places”.

“All that we know about Kish are a few particulars provided by elderly people to the effect that in the late 1930s and early 1940s she was about fifty and often visited villages to paint on commission. She has not been represented at a single exhibition”.
