It was 11:30 a.m., California time, the next day, when I parked my convertible in the driveway of the Tropical Flower Hotel in Palm Springs.	В половине двенадцатого утра по калифорнийскому времени я припарковал свою машину у отеля "Тропический цветок" в Палм-Спрингс.
I checked at the desk and walked down to Cottage No. 5.	Справившись у портье, я отправился к коттеджу номер пять.
When I knocked on the door, there was no answer.	Постучал в дверь, но ответа не последовало.
But the door was unlocked, so I walked in.	Дверь оказалась не заперта, и я прошел внутрь.
"Miss Denton?" I called.	- Мисс Дентон? - позвал я.
There was no answer.	Мне никто не ответил.
Then I heard the shower running in the bathroom. I walked through and opened the bathroom door.	Я услышал звук воды и открыл дверь в ванную.
I could see the outline of her body against the opaque shower curtain.	Я увидел ее силуэт за матовой занавеской.
She was singing in a low, husky voice.	Она что-то тихонько напевала низким хрипловатым голосом.
I closed the bathroom door behind me and sat down on the can. I lit a cigarette while I watched her through the shower curtain.	Закрыв за собой дверь, я уселся на топчан, закурил и стал наблюдать за ней сквозь занавеску.
I didn't have to wait long.	Долго ждать мне не пришлось.
She turned off the water and I could hear her sniff at the cigarette smoke.	Она закрыла воду, почуяв табачный дым, и из-за занавески раздался ее спокойный голос:
Her voice, from behind the curtain, was calm. "If that's one of the bellboys waiting out there, he'd better go before I come out," she said, "or I report him to the desk."	- Если вы посыльный, то вам лучше выйти, иначе я пожалуюсь портье.
I didn't answer.	Я не ответил.
She stuck her head through the shower curtain, groping for a towel.	Прикрывшись полотенцем, она выглянула из-за занавески.
I reached over and put one in her hand.	Я потянулся и взял ее за руку.
Through the curtain, I could see her wrap it around herself, then the curtain slid back and she stared at me. Her eyes were dark gray and unafraid.	Занавеска отодвинулась, и она посмотрела на меня. В ее темно-серых глазах совершенно не было страха.
"The bellboys in this hotel are the worst," she said. "They walk in on you at the oddest times."	- В этом отеле отвратительные посыльные, -сказала она, - вечно являются в самое неподходящее время.
"You could try locking your door."	- Могли бы и закрыть дверь.
She stepped out of the tub.	Она вышла из ванны.
"What for?	- Зачем?
They all have passkeys."	У них у всех есть запасные ключи.
