"What's all this?"	— Что у вас там?
Soames looked at him with his supercilious calm unbroken, but James knew well enough that he was violently angry.	Сомс взглянул на него со своим обычным надменным спокойствием, но Джемс знал, что сын взбешен.
"Our friend," he said, "has exceeded his instructions again, that's all.	— Наш приятель, — сказал он, — снова превысил свои полномочия.

He turned round and walked back towards the door.	Сомс пошел к выходу.
James followed hurriedly, edging himself in front.	Джемс поспешил за ним, стараясь протиснуться вперед.

He held out his hand.	Он протянул руку.
Bosinney did not take it, but, turning with a laugh, said:	Боснии не принял ее и, отвернувшись, сказал со смехом:
"Good-bye, Mr. Forsyte.	— До свидания, мистер Форсайт.
Don't get caught in the storm!" and walked away.	Смотрите, как бы гроза не застала вас в дороге! — и отошел в сторону.
"Well," began James, "I don't know…."	— Ну, — сказал Джемс, — я не знаю…
But the sight of Irene's face stopped him.	Но, взглянув на Ирэн, запнулся.
Taking hold of his daughter-in-law by the elbow, he escorted her towards the carriage.	Ухватив невестку за локоть, он проводил ее до коляски.
He felt certain, quite certain, they had been making some appointment or other….	Джемс был уверен, совершенно уверен, что они назначили друг другу свидание…
Nothing in this world is more sure to upset a Forsyte than the discovery that something on which he has stipulated to spend a certain sum has cost more. And this is reasonable, for upon the accuracy of his estimates the whole policy of his life is ordered.	И это понятно, потому что на точности расчетов построена вся его жизнь.
If he cannot rely on definite values of property, his compass is amiss; he is adrift upon bitter waters without a helm.	Если Форсайт не может рассчитывать на совершенно определенную ценность вещей, значит компас его начинает пошаливать; он несется по бурным волнам, выпустив кормило изрук.
