Her friends were sorry, but could do nothing to help her; so Dorothy went to her own room and lay down on the bed and cried herself to sleep.	Друзья Дороти очень огорчились, но ничем не могли ей помочь. Дороти вернулась в свою комнату, легла в постель и лежала там, тихо плача, пока не уснула.
The next morning the soldier with the green whiskers came to the Scarecrow and said:	На следующий день Солдат с Зелеными Бакенбардами пришел к Страшиле.

So the Scarecrow followed him and was admitted into the great Throne Room, where he saw, sit-ting in the emerald throne, a most lovely Lady.	Страшила проследовал за Солдатом и оказался в тронном зале, где увидел на троне очаровательную женщину.
She was dressed in green silk gauze and wore upon her flowing green locks a crown of jewels.	Красавица была в зеленом шелковом платье, а на голове сверкала корона из драгоценных камней.
Growing from her shoulders were wings, gorgeous in color and so light that they fluttered if the slightest breath of air reached them.	За спиной у нее виднелись крылья, прозрачные и легкие, трепетавшие от малейшего дуновения воздуха.
When the Scarecrow had bowed, as prettily as his straw stuffing would let him, before this beauti-ful creature, she looked upon him sweetly, and said:	Страшила поклонился с учтивостью, на которую только было способно набитое соломой создание. Красавица посмотрела на него с улыбкой:
"I am Oz, the Great and Terrible.	- Я Оз, великий и грозный.
Who are you, and why do you seek me? "	Зачем ты пришел ко мне?
Now the Scarecrow, who had expected to see the great Head Dorothy had told him of, was much astonished; but he answered her bravely.	Страшила, ожидавший увидеть Голову, о которой рассказывала Дороти, сильно удивился, но виду не подал и сказал как ни в чем не бывало:
"I am only a Scarecrow, stuffed with straw.	- Я набитый соломой Страшила.
Therefore I have no brains, and I come to you praying that you will put brains in my head instead of straw, so that I may become as much a man as any other in your dominions. "	У меня нет мозгов, и я очень прошу тебя дать мне немножко, чтобы я был не глупее, чем остальные люди.

If you will kill for me the Wicked Witch of the West, I will bestow upon you a great many brains, and such good brains that you will be the wisest man in all the Land of Oz. "I thought you asked Dorothy to kill the Witch, " said the Scarecrow, in surprise.	- Но ты уже просил Дороти убить Злую Волшебницу, - возразил Страшила.
"So I did.	- Да, это так.
I don't care who kills her.	Мне все равно, кто именно ее убьет.
But until she is dead I will not grant your wish.	Но пока она жива, я не исполню твоей просьбы.
