The Rat remembered that poor Toad had been on prison fare for a considerable time, and that large allowances had therefore to be made.	Тут дядюшка Рэт вспомнил, что бедняга Тоуд долгое время находился на тюремном коште и поэтому не стоило на него сердиться.
He followed him to the table accordingly, and hospitably encouraged him in his gallant efforts to make up for past privations.	Он и сам последовал за ним к столу и, как хороший хозяин, просил его вознаградить себя за все прошлые лишения.
They had just finished their meal and resumed their arm-chairs, when there came a heavy knock at the door.	Они только успели покончить с едой и снова перейти в кресла, как раздался сильный стук в дверь.
Toad was nervous, but the Rat, nodding mysteriously at him, went straight up to the door and opened it, and in walked Mr. Badger.	Тоуд перепугался, а дядюшка Рэт, таинственно кивнув, направился прямо к двери, отпер ее, и в комнату вошел дядюшка Барсук.
He had all the appearance of one who for some nights had been kept away from home and all its little comforts and conveniences.	У него был вид джентльмена, который несколько ночей провел вне дома, будучи лишен маленьких удобств.
His shoes were covered with mud, and he was looking very rough and touzled; but then he had never been a very smart man, the Badger, at the best of times.	Ботинки были в грязи, и выглядел он растрепанным и взъерошенным. Правда, он и прежде не очень-то заботился о своей наружности.
He came solemnly up to Toad, shook him by the paw, and said,	Барсук взглянул на мистера Тоуда серьезно, протянул лапу и сказал:

Alas! what am I saying?	Увы! Что я говорю?
Home, indeed!	Домой, как бы не так!

Then he turned his back on him, sat down to the table, drew his chair up, and helped himself to a large slice of cold pie.	Затем он повернулся к нему спиной, пододвинул стул к столу и отрезал себе большой кусок холодного пирога со свининой.
Toad was quite alarmed at this very serious and portentous style of greeting; but the Rat whispered to him,	Тоуд не на шутку встревожился от такого серьезного и зловещего приветствия. Но дядюшка Рэт шепнул ему:
'Never mind; don't take any notice; and don't say anything to him just yet.	- Ничего, не обращай внимания и пока помолчи.
He's always rather low and despondent when he's wanting his victuals.	Он всегда такой подавленный и падает духом, когда ему надо подкрепиться.
In half an hour's time he'll be quite a different animal.'	Через полчасика он будет совсем другим.
