I've been writing and writing this summer; four short stories finished and sent to four different magazines. So you see I'm trying to be an author. I have a workroom fixed in a corner of the attic where Master Jervie used to have his rainy-day playroom. It's in a cool, breezy corner with two dormer windows, and shaded by a maple tree with a family of red squirrels living in a hole.

I'll write a nicer letter in a few days and tell you all the farm news.

We need rain.

SIR: I address you from the second crotch in the willow tree (сэр, я пишу: «обращаюсь» к вам со второй развилки ивы: «ивового дерева»; to address — адресовать, направлять; обращаться /к кому-либо/) by the pool in the pasture (/растущей/ у пруда на пастбище; pool — лужа, лужица, прудок, озерцо; pasture — подножный корм; пастбище, выгон). There's a frog croaking underneath (лягушка квакает внизу), a locust singing overhead (саранча стрекочет: «поет» над головой) and two little 'devil downheads' darting up and down the trunk (и два маленьких паучка мечутся вверх и вниз по стволу; to dart — помчаться стрелой; ринуться, броситься, метнуться). I've been here for an hour (я здесь уже целый час); it's a very comfortable crotch (это очень удобная развилка), especially after being upholstered with two sofa cushions (особенно после того, как /я/ обустроила ее двумя диванными подушками; to upholster — обивать /мебель материей/). I came up with a pen and tablet (я забралась сюда с ручкой и блокнотом; tablet — дощечка, табличка /с надписью/; блокнот, записная книжка) hoping to write an immortal short story (надеясь написать бессмертный рассказ; short — короткий; short story — рассказ, новелла), but I've been having a dreadful time with my heroine (но я отвратительно провожу время со своей героиней; dreadful — ужасный, страшный; эмоц.-усил. отвратительный, ужасный) — I can’t make her behave as I want her to behave (я не могу заставить ее вести себя так, как я хочу /чтобы она себя вела/); so I've abandoned her for the moment (поэтому я оставила ее на мгновение; to abandon — отказываться, оставлять; покидать, оставлять), and am writing to you (и пишу вам). (Not much relief though (не очень большое утешение, однако; relief — облегчение, утешение; разнообразие, перемена), for I can't make you behave as I want you to, either (потому как я не могу и вас заставить вести себя так, как я того хочу; either — также, тоже).)
