College opens in two weeks (занятия в колледже начинаются через две недели; to open — открывать; открываться, начинаться) and I shall be glad to begin work again (и я буду рада начать работу = заниматься снова). I have worked quite a lot this summer though (правда, я поработала довольно много этим летом) — six short stories and seven poems (шесть рассказов и семь стихотворений). Those I sent to the magazines all came back (те, что я отправила в журналы, все вернулись) with the most courteous promptitude (в самом вежливом срочном порядке; promptitude — быстрота, отсутствие проволочек). But I don't mind (но я не обращаю внимания). It's good practice (это хорошая практика).

He has gone, and we are missing him! When you get accustomed to people or places or ways of living, and then have them snatched away, it does leave an awfully empty, gnawing sort of sensation. I'm finding Mrs. Semple's conversation pretty unseasoned food.

But the last one I did (но последний очерк, который я написала) — just a little sketch laid in college (просто небольшие заметки о жизни в колледже: «действие которых происходит в колледже»; sketch — эскиз, набросок; очерк, заметки; to lay — класть, положить; помещать, переносить /действие и т.п./) — he said wasn't bad (он сказал, что он неплох); and he had it typewritten (и он отдал напечатать его на машинке), and I sent it to a magazine (и я отправила его в журнал). They've had it two weeks (они держат его уже две недели); maybe they're thinking it over (может быть, они обдумывают).

You should see the sky (видели бы вы небо)! There's the queerest orange-coloured light over everything (на всем — удивительнейший оранжевый свет: «здесь самого необычного оранжевого цвета свет на всем»). We're going to have a storm (у нас будет гроза).
