What do you suppose is at present (как вы полагаете, что в настоящее время) engaging my attention in sociology (привлекает мое внимание в /курсе/ социологии)? I am writing (figurez vous!) a paper (я пишу (представьте себе /фр./) доклад; paper — бумага; доклад, статья) on the Care of Dependent Children (на /тему/ «Попечение над детьми-сиротами»; dependent — зависимый, зависящий; получающий помощь /от кого-либо/, находящийся на иждивении). The Professor shuffled up his subjects (профессор перемешал темы; to shuffle — шаркать, волочить ноги; перемешивать) and dealt them out promiscuously (и раздал их в случайном порядке; to deal — распределять, раздавать; promiscuous — разнородный; случайный, непреднамеренный), and that fell to me (и эта тема досталась мне; to fall — падать; выпадать /на чью-либо долю/, доставаться /кому-либо/). C'est dr^ole ca, n'est-ce pas (забавно, не правда ли /фр./)?

There goes the gong for dinner (/звенит/ звонок к обеду; gong — гонг; звонок).

And every week or so a very scrawly epistle, usually on yellow tablet paper, arrives from Princeton. All of which I answer with business-like promptness. So you see — I am not so different from other girls — I get letters, too.

Did I tell you that I have been elected a member of the Senior Dramatic Club? Very recherch'e organization. Only seventy-five members out of one thousand. Do you think as a consistent Socialist that I ought to belong?

Dear Daddy,

Very busy time (очень напряженное время) — commencement in ten days (торжественное собрание, посвященное выпуску = вручение дипломов выпускницам — через десять дней; to commence — начинать; получать ученую степень; commencement — начало; выпускной акт /в колледже/, торжественное собрание, посвященное выпуску), examinations tomorrow (экзамены — завтра); lots of studying (многое /надо/ выучить), lots of packing (многое упаковать), and the outdoor world so lovely (и внешний мир = мир за окном так прелестен; outdoor — находящийся вне дома, на открытом воздухе; внешний, наружный) that it hurts you to stay inside (что обидно оставаться в помещении; to hurt — причинять боль; задевать, обижать).
