It's the kind of character (именно такой характер: «это и есть тот тип характера, который») that I am going to develop (я собираюсь /в себе/ развить). I am going to pretend that all life is just a game (я собираюсь делать вид, что вся жизнь — просто игра) which I must play as skilfully and fairly as I can (в которую я должна играть настолько умело и честно, насколько только могу; skill — мастерство, искусность; ловкость, умение). If I lose (если я проиграю; to lose — терять; проиграть), I am going to shrug my shoulders and laugh (я просто пожму плечами и рассмеюсь) — also if I win (равно как если я выиграю).

Anyway, I am going to be a sport (в любом случае, я собираюсь быть /отличным/ человеком; sport — разг. молодчина, отличный парень). You will never hear me complain again, Daddy dear (вы никогда больше не услышите, как я жалуюсь, дорогой Папочка), because Julia wears silk stockings (из-за того, что Джулия носит шелковые чулки) and centipedes drop off the wall (а многоножки падают со стен).

Did you ever hear of such a discouraging series of events? It isn't the big troubles in life that require character. Anybody can rise to a crisis and face a crushing tragedy with courage, but to meet the petty hazards of the day with a laugh — I really think that requires spirit.
