After the banquet (после торжественного обеда) there was to be a Ball (должен был состояться Бал). The bride and bridegroom were (невеста и жених должны были; to be (was/were, been) + инфинитив — обозначает долженствование, обусловленное договоренностью) to dance the Rose-dance together (станцевать вместе Розовый Танец), and the King had promised to play the flute (и Король пообещал сам сыграть на флейте). `It is quite clear that they love each other,' said the little Page, `as clear as crystal!' and the King doubled his salary a second time. `What an honour!' cried all the courtiers.
