`Nonsense (чепуха)! said the Roman Candle (сказала Римская Свеча), `Romance never dies (романтика никогда не умирает). It is like the moon (она подобна луне), and lives for ever (и живет вечно). The bride and bridegroom (/эти/ жених и невеста), for instance (например), love each other very dearly (любят друг друга очень нежно/горячо; dear — дорогой, милый). I heard all about them this morning (я услышала все о них сегодня утром; to hear (heard)) from a brown-paper cartridge (от катушки оберточной бумаги; brown — коричневый, бурый; paper — бумага), who happened to be staying in the same drawer as myself (которая случайно оказался в том же ящике, что и я; to happen — случаться, происходить; to stay — оставаться, не уходить, гостить) and knew the latest Court news (и знала все последние новости Двора; to know (knew, known)).'

But the Catharine Wheel shook her head (но Огненное Колесо покачало головой; to shake (shook, shaken) — трясти, дрожать; качать). `Romance is dead (романтика мертва), Romance is dead, Romance is dead,' she murmured (шептало оно: «она»). She was one of those people (оно было: «она была» одним из тех людей) who think that (которые думали, что), if you say the same thing (если ты говоришь = повторяешь одно и тоже; thing — вещь, нечто) over and over a great many times (снова и снова очень много раз), it becomes true in the end (в конце концов оно становится правдой).

Suddenly, a sharp, dry cough was heard (внезапно раздался: «послышался» резкий сухой кашель; to hear (heard)), and they all looked round (и они все оглянулись).

It came from a tall (он исходил от высокой; to come (came, come)), supercilious-looking Rocket (надменного вида: «надменно выглядевшей» Ракеты), who was tied (которая была привязана; to tie — связывать, привязывать) to the end of a long stick (к концу длинной палки). He always coughed (она: «он» всегда кашляла) before he made any observation (перед тем как сделать: «он делал» любое замечание; observation — наблюдение, изучение, to observe — наблюдать, замечать), so as to attract attention (для того, что бы привлечь внимание).
