She grew grey as a blossom of the Judas tree, and shuddered. `Be it so,' she muttered. `It is thy soul and not mine. Do with it as thou wilt.' And she took from her girdle a little knife that had a handle of green viper's skin, and gave it to him.

`What shall this serve me?' he asked of her wondering.

She was silent for a few moments, and a look of terror came over her face. Then she brushed her hair back from her forehead, and smiling strangely she said to him, `What men call the shadow of the body is not the shadow of the body, but is the body of the soul. Stand on the sea-shore with thy back to the moon, and cut away from around thy feet thy shadow, which is thy soul's body, and bid thy soul leave thee, and it will do so.'

The young Fisherman trembled (молодой Рыбак задрожал). `Is this true (это правда)?' he murmured (прошептал он).

`It is true (это правда), and I would (и мне очень хотелось бы) that I had not told thee of it (чтобы я не говорила тебе об этом),' she cried (закричала она), and she clung to his knees weeping (и она схватилась за его колени, рыдая; to cling (clung) — прилипать, цепляться).

He put her from him (он оторвал/оттолкнул ее от себя) and left her in the rank grass (и оставил ее в густой траве; to leave (left), rank — буйный, пышный /о растительности/), and going to the edge of the mountain (и, подойдя к краю горы; edge — острие, лезвие; край) he placed the knife in his belt (он положил нож в свой пояс; to place — ставить, помещать), and began to climb down (и начал спускаться вниз; to climb — карабкаться, взбираться, to climb down — слезать, спускаться).

And his Soul (и его Душа) that was within him (что жила в нем: «была внутри него») called out to him (призвала его) and said, `Lo! I have dwelt with thee (послушай, я жила с тобою; to dwell (dwelt)) for all these years (все эти годы), and have been thy servant (и была твоею слугою). Send me not away from thee now (не прогоняй меня прочь от себя), for what evil have I done thee (ведь я не сделала тебе ничего дурного: «ведь какое зло сделала я тебе»)?'

And the young Fisherman laughed (а молодой Рыбак рассмеялся). `Thou has done me no evil (ты не причинила мне никакого зла), but I have no need of thee (но ты мне просто не нужна),' he answered (ответил он). `The world is wide (мир велик: «широк»; wide — широкий, от края до края; обширный, пространный), and there is Heaven also (так же есть Небеса), and Hell (и Ад), and that dim twilight house (и тот тусклый сумеречный дом) that lies between (что лежит между ними). Go wherever thou wilt (иди туда, куда бы ты ни пожелала), but trouble me not (но не тревожь меня), for my love is calling to me (ибо ко мне взывает моя любовь).'
