He tossed his head (он тряхнул своей головой; to toss — бросать, кидать; вскидывать /голову/) and smiled (и улыбнулся). `With what should I love my love (а чем же я буду любить свою любимую; love — любовь; предмет любви, возлюбленный/ая) if I gave thee my heart (если я отдам тебе свое сердце; to give (gave, given))?' he cried.

`Nay, but be merciful (но, будь же милосерден; mercy — милосердие, сострадание),' said his Soul: `give me thy heart (дай мне твое сердце), for the world is very cruel (потому что мир очень жесток), and I am afraid (и я боюсь).'
