And the Soul answered (и Душа ответила), `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee (подойди поближе, чтобы я могла говорить с тобой), for I have seen marvellous things (ибо я видела удивительные вещи).'

So he came nearer (тогда он подошел ближе), and couched in the shallow water (и лег на мелководье), and leaned his head upon his hand (и, опершись головой на руку) and listened (стал слушать).

And after the third year was over, the Soul came down to the shore of the sea, and called to the young Fisherman, and he rose out of the deep and said, `Why dost thou call to me?'

And the Soul answered, `Come nearer, that I may speak with thee, for I have seen marvellous things.'

So he came nearer, and couched in the shallow water, and leaned his head upon his hand and listened.

And the Soul said to him (и Душа сказала ему), `In a city that I know of (в некоем городе, который я знаю) there is an inn (есть трактир; inn — гостиница /обычно за городом/; постоялый двор, трактир) that standeth by a river (что стоит у реки; standeth = stands). I sat there with sailors (я сидела там с матросами; to sit (sat)) who drank of two different coloured wines (которые пили вина двух разных цветов; to drink (drank, drunk)), and ate bread made of barley (и ели хлеб, испеченный из ячменя; to eat (ate, eaten); to make (made), made — сделанный, приготовленный, изготовленный), and little salt fish (и мелкую соленую рыбешку) served in bay leaves (сервированную/поданную на лавровых листьях; to serve — служить, быть слугой; подавать на стол) with vinegar (с уксусом).

And the Soul said to him, `In a city that I know of there is an inn that standeth by a river. I sat there with sailors who drank of two different coloured wines, and ate bread made of barley, and little salt fish served in bay leaves with vinegar.

And as we sat and made merry (и, когда мы сидели и веселились/пировали), there entered to us an old man (вошел к нам /в трактир/ один старик) bearing a leathern carpet (неся /в руках/ кожаный ковер) and a lute (и лютню) that had two horns of amber (у которой было два янтарных рожка/острых конца). And when he had laid out the carpet on the floor (и, когда он разложил на полу ковер; to lay (laid) — класть, положить), he struck with a quill (он ударил пером; to strike (struck, stricken); quill — птичье перо) on the wire strings of his lute (по металлическим струнам: «струнам из проволоки» своей лютни; string —веревка, бечевка; струна), and a girl whose face was veiled ran in (и вбежала девушка, и ее лицо было закрыто вуалью/чадрой; veil — вуаль, чадра, паранджа, to veil — закрывать вуалью, чадрой; to run (ran, run)) and began to dance before us (и начала танцевать перед нами; to begin (began, begun)). Her face was veiled with a veil of gauze (ее лицо было закрыто вуалью из газа/кисеи), but her feet were naked (но ноги ее были обнажены). Naked were her feet (нагими были ее ноги), and they moved over the carpet (и они двигались над ковром) like little white pigeons (как маленькие белые голуби). Never have I seen anything so marvellous (никогда я не видел ничего настолько изумительного/чудесного), and the city in which she dances (и город, в котором она танцует) is but a day's journey from this place (всего лишь в дне пути от этого самого места).'
