She fretted, she lost her appetite, her temper was atrocious. And she frequently burst into tears for no reason at all. Eventually, she went to my Mother and told her the whole story and asked her advice.

“Good gracious, my dear!” my Mother said to her. “You don’t suppose that only one star ever fell out of the sky! Billions fall every night, I’m told. But they fall in different places, of course. You can’t expect two stars to drop in the same field in one lifetime.”

“Then, you think (тогда — ты полагаешь) — if I moved about a bit (если бы я передвинулась чуть-чуть; to move about — передвигать(ся)) — ?” the Red Cow began (Рыжая Корова начала; to begin), a happy, eager look coming into her eyes (счастливый, жаждущий взгляд появился /при этом/ в ее глазах).

“If it were me (на твоем месте: «если бы это была я»),” said my Mother (сказала моя мать), “I’d go and look for one (я бы пошла и искала звезду; to look for — искать).”

“I will (я пойду: «я буду»),” said the Red Cow joyously (сказала Рыжая Корова радостно). “I will indeed (я пойду действительно).”

Mary Poppins paused (Мэри Поппинс сделала паузу).

“And that, I suppose, is why she was walking down Cherry Tree Lane (и вот, я полагаю, есть почему она шла по Вишневой улице),” Jane prompted gently (Джейн подсказала мягко; toprompt — побуждать; толкать; подсказывать; prompt — проворный, быстрый; исполнительный, расторопный).

“Yes (да),” whispered Michael (прошептал Майкл), “she was looking for her star (она искала свою звезду).”

Mary Poppins sat up with a little start (Мэри Поппинс села, выпрямившись, с небольшим вздрагиванием = слегка вздрогнув). The intent look had gone from her eyes (направленный/настойчивый = погруженный /в мысль/ взгляд ушел из ее глаз) and the stillness from her body (а неподвижность — из ее тела).

“Come down from that window at once, sir (спускайтесь: «сходите вниз» от этого окна сейчас же, сэр)!” she said crossly (она сказала сердито). “I am going to turn on the lights (я собираюсь включить свет; to turn on — включать).” And she hurried across the landing to the electric light switch (и она поспешила через лестничную площадку к электрического света выключателю).

“Michael!” said Jane in a careful whisper (сказала Джейн осторожным шепотом). “Just have one look (просто выгляни: «имей один взгляд») and see if the cow’s still there (и посмотри, там ли еще корова).”

Hurriedly Michael peered out through the gathering dusk (поспешно Майкл выглянул через сгущающиеся: «собирающиеся» сумерки; tohurry — спешить).

“Then, you think — if I moved about a bit — ?” the Red Cow began, a happy, eager look coming into her eyes.

“If it were me,” said my Mother, “I’d go and look for one.”

“I will,” said the Red Cow joyously. “I will indeed.”

Mary Poppins paused.

“And that, I suppose, is why she was walking down Cherry Tree Lane,” Jane prompted gently.

“Yes,” whispered Michael, “she was looking for her star.”

Mary Poppins sat up with a little start. The intent look had gone from her eyes and the stillness from her body.

“Come down from that window at once, sir!” she said crossly. “I am going to turn on the lights.” And she hurried across the landing to the electric light switch.

“Michael!” said Jane in a careful whisper. “Just have one look and see if the cow’s still there.”

Hurriedly Michael peered out through the gathering dusk.

“Quickly (быстро)!” said Jane. “Mary Poppins will be back in one minute (Мэри Поппинс вернется через одну минуту). Can you see her (ты можешь ее видеть)?”

“No-o-o (н-е-е-т),” said Michael, staring out (сказал Майкл, выглядывая; to stare — пристальноглядеть, вглядываться; уставиться). “Not a sign of her (ни следа: «ни знака» ее). She’s gone (она ушла).”

“I do hope she finds it (я действительно надеюсь, /что/ она найдет ее)!” said Jane, thinking of the Red Cow (думая о Рыжей Корове) roaming through the world (скитающейся по: «через» миру) looking for a star to stick on her horn (разыскивая звезду, чтобы наколоть на свой рог).

“So do I (и я надеюсь: «также надеюсь я»),” said Michael as (сказал Майкл, когда), at the sound of Mary Poppins’ returning footsteps (при звуке шагов возвращающейся Мэри Поппинс: «при звуке возвращающихся шагов Мэри Поппинс»), he hurriedly pulled down the blind (он поспешно потянул вниз штору)…
