Jane and Michael gazed at each other (Джейн и Майкл пристально посмотрели друг на друга). Was it a dream (был это сон) from which they would wake (от которого они проснутся)? Or were they seeing (или они видели), of all things (надо же/кто бы мог подумать: «из всех вещей»), a Panda (панду)! And a Panda in its own home (и панду в его собственном доме) and not behind bars in a zoo (а не за решеткой в зоопарке; bars — прутья /решетки/).

Then, to Jane and Michael’s disappointment — they would dearly have liked some tropical fruit — she shook her head decisively and said, “East!”

Again the world went spinning round them — or were they spinning round the world? And then, whichever it was ceased.

They found themselves in a grassy clearing surrounded by bamboo trees. Green paperlike leaves rustled in the breeze. And above that quiet swishing they could hear a steady rhythmic sound — a snore, or was it a purr?

Glancing round, they beheld a large furry shape — black with blotches of white, or was it white with blotches of black? They could not really be sure.

Jane and Michael gazed at each other. Was it a dream from which they would wake? Or were they seeing, of all things, a Panda! And a Panda in its own home and not behind bars in a zoo.

The dream (сон), if it was a dream (если это был сон), drew a long breath (глубоко вздохнул: «потянул длинное дыхание»; to draw).

“Whoever it is (кто бы это ни был), please go away (пожалуйста, идите прочь = уходите), I rest in the afternoon (я отдыхаю днем).”

The voice was as furry (голос был такой же меховой) as the rest of him (как и остальная часть его).

“Very well (очень хорошо), then (тогда), we will go away (мы уйдем: «будемуходить»). And then perhaps (и тогда, возможно)” — Mary Poppins’s voice was at its most priggish (Мэри Поппинс голос был наставительным/самоуверенным донельзя: «в своей наибольшей степени наставительным»; priggish — педантичный, скрупулезный; самодовольный, самоуверенный; prig — педант) — “you’ll be sorry you missed us (вы будете сожалеть, что упустили нас).”

The Panda opened one black eye (панда открыл один черный глаз). “Oh, it’s you, my dear girl (о, это ты, моя дорогая девочка),” he said sleepily (он сказал сонно). “Why not have let me know (почему не дала мне знать) you were coming (что ты приезжаешь)? Difficult though it would have been (трудно хотя это было бы), for you I would have stayed awake (для тебя я бы остался бодрствующим).” The furry shape yawned (меховая фигура зевнула) and stretched itself (и потянулась: «потянула себя»). “Ah well (а, ладно), I’ll have to make a home for you all (я должен буду сделать дом для вас всех). There wouldn’t be enough room in mine (не будет достаточно пространства в моем).” He nodded at a neat shelter (он кивнул на аккуратное укрытие) made of leaves and bamboo sticks (сделанное из листьев и бамбуковых палок). “But (но),” he added (он добавил), eying the herring (разглядывая сельдь; toeye — смотреть, пристально разглядывать), “I will not allow that scaly sea-thing (я не допущу эту чешуйчатую морскую штуку; scale — чешуйка) under any roof of mine (под какую-либо мою крышу). Fishes are far too fishy for me (рыбы — намного слишком = чересчур рыбные для меня).”

“We shall not be staying (мы не останемся),” Mary Poppins assured him (Мэри Поппинс заверила его). “We’re taking a little trip round the world (мы предпринимаем: «берем» небольшое путешествие вокруг света) and just looked in for a moment (и просто заглянули на минуту).”

The dream, if it was a dream, drew a long breath.

“Whoever it is, please go away, I rest in the afternoon.”

The Panda opened one black eye. “Oh, it’s you, my dear girl,” he said sleepily. “Why not have let me know you were coming? Difficult though it would have been, for you I would have stayed awake.” The furry shape yawned and stretched itself. “Ah well, I’ll have to make a home for you all. There wouldn’t be enough room in mine.” He nodded at a neat shelter made of leaves and bamboo sticks. “But,” he added, eying the herring, “I will not allow that scaly sea-thing under any roof of mine. Fishes are far too fishy for me.”

“We shall not be staying,” Mary Poppins assured him. “We’re taking a little trip round the world and just looked in for a moment.”
