I was so intent on the scene (я был настолько поглощен этим видом; scene — местодействия/вроманеит.п./;вид, пейзаж) that I had not noticed Wilson get off the parapet and come towards us (что я не заметил, что Уилсон слез с парапета и пошел по направлению к нам). As he passed us my friend stopped him (когда он проходил мимо нас, мой друг остановил его).

"Hullo, Wilson, I haven’t seen you bathing the last few days (привет, Уилсон, последние несколько дней я не видел вас на пляже: «купающимся»; to bathe — купаться/вморе, реке/,плавать)."

"I’ve been bathing on the other side for a change (я купался на другом берегу, для разнообразия; side— стена; берег;change— перемена, изменение; замена, смена, разнообразие)."

My friend then introduced me (затем мой друг представил меня; tointroduce— вводить; представлять, знакомить). Wilson shook hands with me politely, but with indifference (Уилсон пожал мне руку вежливо, но безразлично: «но с безразличием»; toshake— трясти, встряхивать; пожимать /руку/); a great many strangers come to Capri for a few days, or a few weeks (огромное множество людей приезжает на Капри на несколько дней или несколько недель; stranger— незнакомец; посторонний человек, гость); and I had no doubt he was constantly meeting people who came and went (и я не сомневался: «и у меня не было сомнений», что он постоянно встречался с людьми, которые приезжали и уезжали); and then my friend asked him to come along and have a drink with us (и затем мой друг пригласил его пойти выпить с нами: «пойти вместе и выпить с нами»; toask— спрашивать; приглашать).

"I was just going back to supper (я как раз шел назад = домой ужинать)," he said.

"Can’t it wait (а он /ужин/ не может подождать)?" I asked (спросил я).

"I suppose it can (полагаю, может)," he smiled (улыбнулся он).

"Can’t it wait?" I asked.

"I suppose it can," he smiled.
