I left the room (я вышел из комнаты). Half an hour later I started for Mr. Beldheimer’s house (через полчаса я направился к дому Бельдхаймера; later – позже; to start – отправляться, пускаться в путь; направляться); leaving the arrangements for the morning of the first of March in the hands of the doctor and my wife (оставив приготовления к утру первого марта в руках доктора и жены = предоставив доктору и жене принять необходимые меры утром первого марта).

 I made a last attempt to cheer him. “Come, come, Francis! keep a good heart. You will be out of bed in a fortnight.”

He shook his head on the pillow. “There’s something wrong,” he said. “I don’t expect you to believe me, sir. I only say there’s something wrong – and time will show it.”

I left the room. Half an hour later I started for Mr. Beldheimer’s house; leaving the arrangements for the morning of the first of March in the hands of the doctor and my wife.

The one thing which principally struck me when I joined the guests at the “Silver Wedding” (одно обстоятельство, которое особенно меня поразило, когда я присоединился к гостям на серебряной свадьбе) is also the one thing which it is necessary to mention here (также /является обстоятельством, которое/ необходимо упомянуть здесь). On this joyful occasion a noticeable lady present was out of spirits (на этом веселом празднестве одна присутствовавшая приметная дама была в подавленном настроении; joy – радость; noticeable – заметный, приметный; достойный внимания; to notice – замечать; обращать внимание; spirit – душа; дух; spirits – душевный настрой, расположение духа). That lady was no other than the heroine of the festival, the mistress of the house (та дама была не кто иной, как главное действующее лицо праздника, хозяйка дома; heroine – героиня, главное действующее лицо /романа, фильма и т. д./)!

In the course of the evening I spoke to Mr. Beldheimer’s eldest son on the subject of his mother (в течение вечера я говорил со старшим сыном господина Бельдхаймера о его матери). As an old friend of the family (как старый друг семьи), I had a claim on his confidence which the young man willingly recognized (я имел право на его доверие, и молодой человек охотно это признал; to recognize – узнавать; признавать).
