‘I’m Cathy.’ She shrugged. ‘It was our wedding anniversary a year ago today. We’d booked dinner in the pub restaurant.’ Cathy shivered and drew her long, expensive coat closer.

‘Tell me about it, it’s good to talk,’ urged Martin, sounding much like a TV advert for lonely hearts.

‘As we stepped out of the car, John handed me a little gift-wrapped box,’ resumed Cathy. ‘I couldn’t wait, so I tore off the paper. As I snapped the tiny lid back something tumbled out onto the ground. It was one of a pair of the most gorgeous diamond earrings.’

Martin nodded sympathetically (Мартин сочувственно кивнул). ‘It’s pitch dark in that car-park (там на парковке очень темно; pitch-dark – черный как смоль; непроглядный, очень темный; pitch – смола; вар; деготь).’

‘It was (так было),’ agreed Cathy (согласилась Кэти). ‘It still is (и до сих пор так и есть). They’ve done nothing about it (они ничего с этим не сделали). Chance in a million, they said (один шанс на миллион, сказали они).’

Martin nodded sympathetically. ‘It’s pitch dark in that car-park.’

‘It was,’ agreed Cathy. ‘It still is. They’ve done nothing about it. Chance in a million, they said.’

‘What (что) – losing an earring (потерять сережку)?’

Cathy shook her head (Кэти потрясла головой; to shake).

‘While we were looking for it on hands and knees (пока мы искали ее на четвереньках: «на руках и коленях»), a speeding car swerved into the car park (машина на большой скорости свернула на парковку; speed – скорость; to speed – двигаться поспешно; мчаться). John didn’t stand a chance (у Джона не было ни малейшего шанса; to stand – стоять; сhance – случай; случайность; шанс, возможность; to stand a chance – иметь шанс). He died in my arms (он умер у меня на руках).’

‘What – losing an earring?’

Cathy shook her head.

‘While we were looking for it on hands and knees, a speeding car swerved into the car park. John didn’t stand a chance. He died in my arms.’

Martin put a hand up to ease the knot of his tie (Мартин поднял руку, чтобы ослабить узел своего галстука).
