‘So – did anyone measure up to John?’ He took a long, relaxed swallow of his cognac. He didn’t even bat an eyelid when the pub door slammed again and Cathy jerked upright to stare, wide-eyed, at the newcomer.

‘No, they didn’t (нет, они не смогли),’ she replied (ответила она) after pulling herself together (снова взяв себя в руки). ‘Gary was big and tall like John (Гэри был крупным и высоким, как Джон), and he had the same brilliant blue eyes (и у него были такие же искрящиеся голубые глаза). ‘No, they didn’t,’ she replied after pulling herself together. ‘Gary was big and tall like John, and he had the same brilliant blue eyes. But he needed constant attention and reassurance. No inner strength, not a bit like John.’

‘And after Gary (а после Гэри)?’

‘It was David (это был Дэвид). He had John’s curly brown hair (у него были волнистые русые волосы, как у Джона) and the same deep, bass voice (и такой же глубокий, низкий голос; bass – бас; басовый, низкий). But his idea of a night out (но его представлением о свидании; night out – ночь, проведенная вне дома (в развлечениях) was sitting outside a Kentucky Fried (было посидеть снаружи «Кентуккских жареных кур»[12]), munching chicken (жуя цыпленка) and listening to the car radio (и слушая радио в машине). ‘And after Gary?’

‘It was David. He had John’s curly brown hair and the same deep, bass voice. But his idea of a night out was sitting outside a Kentucky Fried, munching chicken and listening to the car radio. Tight-fisted jerk!’

Martin’s grin became a little uncomfortable (усмешка Мартина стала немного неловкой; to become; uncomfortable – неудобный; испытывающий неудобство, стесненный).

‘No man can ever replace John, can he Cathy (никакой мужчина никогда не сможет заменить Джона, не так ли, Кэти)?’ he said into the silence (сказал он в тишине: «в тишину/безмолвие»). ‘You know you’re letting a dead man ruin your life, aren’t you (ты знаешь, что ты позволяешь мертвому человеку рушить твою жизнь, не так ли)?’

Martin’s grin became a little uncomfortable.
