Человек-невидимка (The Invisible Man)

There was a pushing and shuffling, a sound of heavy feet as fresh people turned up to increase the pressure of the crowd.	Опять началась толкотня и давка, слышался топот подбегавших любопытных.
People now were coming out of the houses.	Из всех домов выскакивали люди.
The doors of the "Jolly Cricketers" stood suddenly wide open.	Двери "Веселых крикетистов" распахнулись настежь.
Very little was said.	Говорили мало.
Kemp felt about, his hand seeming to pass through empty air.	Кемп водил рукой, словно ощупывал пустоту.
"He's not breathing," he said, and then,	- Не дышит, - сказал он.
"I can't feel his heart.	- И сердце не бьется.
His side-ugh!"	Бок у него... ох!
Suddenly an old woman, peering under the arm of the big navvy, screamed sharply.	Какая-то старуха, выглядывавшая из-под локтя рослого землекопа, вдруг громко вскрикнула.
"Looky there!" she said, and thrust out a wrinkled finger.	-Глядите! - сказала она, вытянув морщинистый палец.
And looking where she pointed, everyone saw, faint and transparent as though it was made of glass, so that veins and arteries and bones and nerves could be distinguished, the outline of a hand, a hand limp and prone.	И, взглянув в указанном ею направлении, все увидели контур руки, бессильно лежавшей на земле; рука была словно стеклянная, можно было разглядеть все вены и-артерии, все кости и нервы.
It grew clouded and opaque even as they stared.	Она теряла прозрачность и мутнела на глазах.
"Hullo!" cried the constable.	- Ого! - воскликнул констебль.
"Here's his feet a-showing!"	- А вот и ноги показываются.
And so, slowly, beginning at his hands and feet and creeping along his limbs to the vital centres of his body, that strange change continued.	И так медленно, начиная с рук и ног, постепенно расползаясь по всем членам до жизненных центров, продолжался этот странный переход к видимой телесности.
It was like the slow spreading of a poison.	Это напоминало медленное распространение яда.
First came the little white nerves, a hazy grey sketch of a limb, then the glassy bones and intricate arteries, then the flesh and skin, first a faint fogginess, and then growing rapidly dense and opaque.	Сперва показались тонкие белые нервы, образуя как бы слабый контур тела, затем мышцы и кожа, принимавшие сначала вид легкой туманности, но быстро тускневшие и уплотнявшиеся.
Presently they could see his crushed chest and his shoulders, and the dim outline of his drawn and battered features.	Вскоре можно было различить разбитую грудь, плечи и смутный абрис изуродованного лица.
When at last the crowd made way for Kemp to stand erect, there lay, naked and pitiful on the ground, the bruised and broken body of a young man about thirty.	Когда наконец толпа расступилась и Кемпу удалось встать на ноги, то взорам всех присутствующих предстало распростертое на земле голое, жалкое, избитое и изувеченное тело человека лет тридцати.
His hair and brow were white-not grey with age, but white with the whiteness of albinism-and his eyes were like garnets.	Волосы и борода у него были белые, не седые, как у стариков, а белые, как у альбиносов, глаза красные, как гранаты.
