Человек-невидимка (The Invisible Man)

He laughed, and put his hand to the locked door.	- Он засмеялся и потрогал запертую дверь.
"Barred out of my own bedroom, by a flagrant absurdity!" he said.	Изгнан из собственной спальни - и кем? Призраком. Вопиющая нелепость!
He walked to the head of the staircase, turned, and stared at the locked doors.	Он подошел к верхней ступеньке лестницы, оглянулся и снова посмотрел на запертые двери.
"It's fact," he said. He put his fingers to his slightly bruised neck.	- Неоспоримый факт, - произнес он, дотрагиваясь до слегка ноющего затылка.
"Undeniable fact!	- Да, неоспоримый факт.
"But-" He shook his head hopelessly, turned, and went downstairs.	Но... - Он безнадежно покачал головой, повернулся и спустился вниз.
He lit the dining-room lamp, got out a cigar, and began pacing the room, ejaculating. Now and then he would argue with himself.	Он зажег лампу в столовой, ваял сигарету и начал шагать по комнате, то бормоча что-то бессвязное, то громко споря сам с собой.
"Invisible!" he said.	- Невидимка! - сказал он.
"Is there such a thing as an invisible animal? ... In the sea, yes.	- Может ли быть невидимое существо? В море -да.
Thousands-millions.	Там таких существ тысячи, миллионы!
All the larvae, all the little nauplii and tornarias, all the microscopic things, the jelly-fish.	Все крохотные науплиусы и торнарии, все микроорганизмы... а медузы!
In the sea there are more things invisible than visible!	В море невидимых существ больше, чем видимых!
I never thought of that before. And in the ponds too!	Прежде я никогда об этом не думал... А в прудах!
All those little pond-life things-specks of colourless translucent jelly! But in air?	Все эти крохотные организмы, живущие в прудах, - кусочки бесцветной, прозрачной слизи... Но в воздухе?
No!	Нет!
"It can't be.	Это невозможно.
"But after all-why not?	А впрочем, почему бы и нет?
"If a man was made of glass he would still be visible."	Будь человек сделан из стекла - и то он был бы видим.
His meditation became profound.	Кемп глубоко задумался.
The bulk of three cigars had passed into the invisible or diffused as a white ash over the carpet before he spoke again.	Три сигары обратились в белый пепел, рассыпанный по ковру, прежде чем он заговорил снова.
Then it was merely an exclamation.	Или, вернее, вскрикнул.
He turned aside, walked out of the room, and went into his little consulting-room and lit the gas there.	Затем он вышел из комнаты, прошел в свою приемную и зажег там газовый рожок.
It was a little room, because Dr. Kemp did not live by practice, and in it were the day's newspapers.	Комната была небольшая. Так как доктор Кемп не занимался практикой, там лежали газеты.
